Car accident/car issues

Cliff's: I got into a car accident this morning.Sorry if this is too livejournal-y, but I just wanted to vent about getting into a car accident this morning on my way to work. It was on a 7 lane major artery. Some guy turned left without seeing my coming up the far right lane (the other two lanes were stopped). I'm fine, but I'll need at least my bumper replaced. And I'm still a little shaky. Since I was just going straight and wasn't doing anything wrong, I hope they find him at fault so I won't have to pay my deductible. AND I just had to have a new tire put on my car on Sunday. Thanks for costing me so much money this month, Saturn. What the worst thing you've had happen to a car? My answer:When I was 19 I flipped my mom's car onto the driver's side and got pulled out of it by the fire department. I was fine then too, the car was totaled. And the best part? My mom hadn't even seen the car - my dad had bought it for her that same day.And no, I don't routinely get into accidents! That last one was 8 years ago!

• He was turning left & you were going straight? He was coming from your right, I imagine. Unless you ran a red light or stop sign, it should be deemed his fault. That also generally means that not only won't you have to pay your deductible, but his insurance should cover the damage 100%, not yours. Just be sure to report it to your insurance immediately, and when you get his insurance info contact them directly too. DO NOT ADMIT ANY FAULT. Sorry it happened to you. That crunch is such an awful sound. I guess you weren't hurt? That's good, at least. Just wait 'til tomorrow before representing to anyone that you're not injured. Whiplash and related injuries can take up to 24 hours for you to feel them. Hopefully, you won't have any of that.
• Sorry about your accident, Mery.  Just glad you're okay.
• Ugh car accidents are the worst!  Sorry that you got into one today and I hope you don't have to pay your deductible. Last summer a woman ran a red light and hit me going over 50 mph and never slowed down, she just wasn't paying attention at all, she totaled my car.  Which wasn't new but it was new to me. I'd only been driving it for 2 days.  Luckily there was a witness and she got ticketed, unfortunately the ticket was only 89 bucks.

• When I was in High School I had my mom's jeep (I usually drove a little junkie cavalier) I was waiting to turn and I was waiting in the middle of the intersection so the light turned red, i waited for all the other cars to stop (there was 1 other) and then I turned (I couldn't back up). A Ford Explorer decided to run the red and T-boned me. Luckily my friend was really skinny at the time because his door was smashed but he was okay. The other driver got the ticket. And luckily we got out okay. I'm don't think the same would have happened if we were driving the cavalier.

• A couple of years ago I bought my first BRAND new car, straight off the lot. Within the first year of having it, I was hit 3 times. None my fault and all the damage was fixed, but I swore my car was cursed.

• Oh my god, Arbs! I guess the black one on the right is your car?Danielle, something similar happened to my step father. An old lady ran a red and totaled his car. Thanks for the concern, guys! So far, I just have a welt/brush burn (?) on my neck from where the seat belt dug into me a little, which should go away soon.I was heading west and he was heading east. He made a left to turn north onto a side street. There was no stop sign or light and I was going the speed limit. There was just a lot of traffic, which means he didn't see my car coming and I was looking ahead, so I didn't see him until it was too late. I called my insurance company when I came in and they recorded my statement. He has the same insurance company (but different claims adjuster, of course) so hopefully things will be simple and fast.

• I drove a stick for a while.  I lived at the top of a hill.  For some reason I thought it would be a good idea to park my car outside my house sans emergency brake.  I went in to take a nap.  About an hour later, a knock on my front door woke me up.  It was a police officer asking if I was the owner of a yada yada.  Yes, I inquired.  Well, turns out my car rolled down said hill, hitting every parked car on the way down.  About 6 total.  It was bad to say the least!
• Oh, and two bad car accidents: My first accident was 3 months after I got my license. I was inexperienced, swerved to avoid a squirrel, road curved, I didn't curve with it, up the sidewalk, and into a tree. I wasn't wearing a seatbelt but my 1980 Sunbird saved my life. The tree took out the entire front end, straight up to the windshield, and a telephone pole sheared off my drivers' side mirror. I pretty much walked out of it, thankfully, with a concussion, hairline skull fracture, sprained neck & shoulder, sprained knee, and a hole in my knee that took 3 stitches. It made me phobic about driving for a short while. The second bad one wasn't nearly as physically bad. But I had a brand new 2000 Mustang GT Convertible that I got in August of 2000. That December I was on my way to a friend's holiday party in MA and in CT this dumb b!tch in a '98 Jetta made an illegal left turn and came across my front end. I didn't even have 5,000 miles on the car. I was FURIOUS, and the chick's boyfriend comes out with, "Oh well, that's what insurance is for." My mint 'stang. Yeah, I told him to get away from me. Fast. It was either that, or I was going to rip off his head and shove it down his neck. $2,367 later (their insurance paid every penny), the car was like new again, though not with matching numbers on all the parts, not mint, not all original. Yeah, I'm a car chick.
• That was my roommates car.  My car is in front of hers, and DH's car is the first one.  We were parked in front of our place, and some guy was speeding and his "windshield was dirty" and he plowed into her car, which hit mine and so on.  Both mine and her car were totalled.  The irony is that we lived between a driver's ed school and an insurance building. Here's another angle

• Oh no Capri! I think FFIL did something similar once, but I don't think he hit anyone. His car just went rolling down a hill. Larissa, I'm becoming more of a car geek too. I want a classic mustang. FI asks how much one will cost and I'm like, "It really depends on the quality of the car, if the numbers match, the level of restoration, etc." My car only has 35,000 miles but I wouldn't be sad if it got totaled. It's a Saturn Ion.

• That must have been fun to come out and find. Was it during the day? I assume the pic was taken soon after. Did you hear it or did he knock on your door?I saw a car parked on my street once with the wheel falling off and I figured someone had hit it where it was parked. Ugh.

• I'm really sorry to hear about your accident. Car accidents are awful. One time I did this:That was the second car I totalled. I don't have a pic of the first one anymore. From the accident above I have this spot on my leg I can't feel anymore, but I was otherwise fine.I also had a Honda Civic die on me after its timing belt broke. That is kind of like having a heart attack.I don't have the best luck with cars.

• Sarah - what HAPPENED to that car? I think the one I flipped didn't look that bad! I'm so glad you're relatively okay. It's amazing that people come out of the worst car accidents unscathed.

• I've only ever been rear ended, but whip lash is a Biiiitch!
• That accident happened at around 730 on a Sunday morning while the guy was on his way to church, hence the powder blue suit.   This was right after DH and I started dating, and he was over and he woke up to go to the bathroom and looked out the window and saw that outside so went to find out what happened. I was half asleep so I didn't hear him to call me to come outside, and when I looked out the window I just remember thinking "Wow, we all parked really close together last night," then I figured out what was going on.   It was really fun to have to wake up my roommate by telling her that her car was totalled

• Glad to hear that you are ok, that is scary.
• Sarah - what HAPPENED to that car? I think the one I flipped didn't look that bad! I'm so glad you're relatively okay.70MPH, highway, drizzling weather, hydroplaned on what must have been a dip in the road where water pooled, met light pole. Let's just say I don't drive above the speed limit anymore, and when it's raining I slow it down to 55 and get in the right lane.
