Jack and Jill

I had heard this term before and assumed it meant a wedding shower for both the bride and groom, but in a previous post Nebb said something about selling tickets? Is this an area specific thing?

Re: Jack and Jill

 • Also known as a Stag and/or Buck and Doe.You sell tickets to get in and then you usually sell raffle tickets when they get in the door.

 • Thanks Stage! That does seem a wee bit tacky, then!

 • It's a Southern Ontario thing.  Wikipediea hereThe B&G's wedding party organizes the party, sells tickets to get in, then you sell drinks, and have games (that people pay money to play) and raffle off prizes.  Food's free though....There's no way to dress up that it's a fundraiser, but in certain areas is the norm and not only ok, but expected.Very regional though.

 • It is common in some areas, for friends of the couple to throw this type of party with lots of entertainment as a fundraiser for the wedding. Also known as a "social" in some parts, I believe. I'm not in the mood to discuss the tackiness of this, it's been discussed at length on this board. Suffice it to say, it is very common in some areas.

 • wow, I had no idea it was a southern ontario thing specifically.
 • I always knew them as regional to Manitoba. But there are some around here the odd time too. We call them socials. Our friends in MB wanted to throw us one, but we declined. That being said, I'm not against them, at all - because of the regionality of them; I am however, against the b&g forcing people to buy tickets and then not invite them to the wedding...it's different if my local grocery store has them for sale, and we know the couple, and know our friends will be going...because socials are a FUN time.

 • I'm from Chicago and I've been invited to one.  It was basically a fundraising event.  Tickets were $25 a person ($40 a couple, what a deal) and they gave you cheap, crappy food, the bride's brother was the DJ, they gave you off brand beer and wine and door prizes worthy of a child's birthday party.DH and I didn't go because I could smell it from a mile away but I have some friends that went.   People were requesting refunds at the end of the night.
 • Ha! There was a girl on some board who was asking about it and said we wouldn't understand because it was Canadian culture. Which is SO different from American culture? I guess she was right in that it's Canadian.

 • I'm from Southwestern Ontario, and every wedding I've attended in the last 10 years has had a Stag and Doe/ Jack and Jill/Buck and Doe whatever you want to call it. You charge for tickets (either per person or couple) you then rent a hall or community centre, bring in all your own liquor, have door prizes, giveaways, 50/50 draws, raffle items etc...

 • Canadians are quite different from Americans in many ways...

 • My friend is planning one for her upcoming wedding, her reasoning is they need to make back some of the money they are spending on the wedding. I feel that if you need to do that, you need to have set a way different budget than you did.
 • Tickets are usually around $10, then you can do 50/50, silent auction prizes, but food is usually like pickles, cheese, veggies, buns, cold cuts...but I've never seen cheap brands of booze or beer. Usually a pretty good DJ plays. It's like a bar nite out in a community hall usually with friends and family.

 • I'm in Southern Ontario, and we are having one February 13th. It's very expected in our circle. Tix are 10 bux and we'll sell cheap booze and will have raffle prizes. At around 10:00 pm there will be a buffet with pulled pork sandwiches and salads and desserts. It sounds tacky writing it out, but it's very much the norm in our area. Probably around 275 people will come, but more will buy tickets.
 • Tix are 10 bux Wow. NFT.

 • Which is SO different from American culture?Well, it is a different country, so... yeah. Different culture. Just because it's attached to the USA doesn't mean it's the same. You may be surprised to hear that Mexico is the same way.
