Shelly, I got that in the OP; not sure how it was misconstrued. I think it's fine, even if a guest didn't bring a gift, they can still put their name in. Or you could already have everyone's name put in a jar when they all arrive, if you know for sure who will be there.

That's all I'm wondering.  I agree, the envelope thing is weird.  I thought a card with information about the guest might be convenient.

When you said card, I thought you meant thank you card.  I'm dumb.  I think a note card would be fine.

I went to a shower where this was done and thought it was a little weird.  Plus, there were a lot of women there with their daughters, so they still had to fill out another piece of paper with their names.  I guess the person pulling the names liked the pieces of paper more than the envelopes, so all the kids got the prizes.

If it's just a slip of paper, then I think that's fine. I HATE when anyone wants you to fill out your own Thank You envelope. I just dropped anywhere from $50-$100 on your baby. Fill out a fukcing envelope with my name on it, Rudeness. (just a statement, shelly, not directed to you!)

my thought was, having them put down a name and address and then I'd write what they gave on the card and draw at the end.But I just don't want to break any rules.

its rude. get some tickets and do a door prize with those.  dont make people do the mom's (or brides) job for her.

Eh, I wouldn't mind as long as the prize was booze and not something lame like stationary or something.

Please don't do this.  Just write the cards out yourself presuming that you already have the names and addresses when doing the invitations.An excel spreadsheet would be even better.
