New York-New York City

At A Crossroad......

Me and my fiance would like to get married Oct. 2011. Our initial plan was to get married at his parents house in CT. It's a cute house, but I'm not crazy about the idea. I would love nothing more than to get married in NYC. This place has so many memories for us. The problem? We're pretty much on an extreme budget. That, and our family will be coming from all over the US. I know my family won't have a problem with traveling and staying in the city. They love it just as much as I do, and some relatives have a condo there.

My fiance suggested that we go to a restaurant and have our family pay for their plates in place of a wedding gift. First off, I don't even know how to ask everybody to pay for their stuff, and second, we'll be in a new apartment (I hate to sound selfish) but we're gonna need things. So my main question is, can we do NYC on a budget?

If it helps, I'm looking to invite 45 people, but I have no problem cutting the list. Thanks!!

What kind of budget are you talking about?

We are on a budget, and are planning to book at ReBar sometime this week.  It feels expensive, but I think it's worth it to us.  We're thinking of doing just a ceremony in Brooklyn Bridge Park ($25 permit fee), an afternoon reception at ReBar, and then a karaoke party afterwards.  Sunday we hope to do a picnic for the day-after brunch.  It's still spending money, but I feel good about it-- it's what we want!

Our whole wedding weekend should be under $20,000, which is a lot of money, but not when we're talking about NYC.  And since we are saving up and paying for the vast majority of it ourselves, we are making the wedding about us, and what we love.

You only get one wedding, and IMHO you should be excited about your plan!  The moment, we went to ReBar, I couldn't wait to get married there!  I also can't wait to sing karaoke with my loved ones, in my wedding dress!  LOL!  You don't have to spend a fortune, but I hope that you can come up with a plan that your are EXCITED about.  Is there anything that excites you about CT?

    Good luck!

Ok, and dont take this wrong way, but a gift is not required nor is it a guarantee. We had a few guests at our wedding that gave us just a card, one guest gave us nothing. You dont know how to ask people to pay for their plate because there is no way to ask. Its rude. Look at it this way: would you invite people to your house for a dinner party and then afterwards hand them a bill?

It is very possible to have a NYC wedding on a small budget if you choose to do it in a restaurant. There are a lot of places that have packages (4 courses, $35 per person for example). If you guys have a favorite restaurant give them a call! They may be able to work a deal out with you guys. Good luck!

A lot of places will also do a buffet in a room for you...many Irish bars here in NYC have private rooms where you can have food.  You could also go cocktail party type thing...

I bet if you go on google and just type in 'Private party rooms NYC" you should be fine.
