NYC First Dance Lessons info

My fiance and I are looking into taking classes for our first dance.  Does anyone know how many classes we should get?  We would like a semi-choreographed waltz.  And what the appropriate pricing?  Also, when should we begin and when should our last class be in relation to our wedding day?

Any other guidance or advise on this topic is appreciated.

Re: NYC First Dance Lessons info

  • My fi and I are taking a private lesson at Dance with me soho this sat. I can let you know how it goes
  • Here's my advice, but bear in mind I'm a bit of a Captain Prepare so take that as you will!
I recommend taking 4 to 8 group classes first, just to be sure the style works for you. Group classes aren't terribly expensive so they're low commitment. I'd recommend Dance Fever in Brooklyn, but if you prefer Manhattan (although it's going to cost you more than Brooklyn), Stepping Out Studios.
Group ballroom courses cover 3 to 4 styles (waltz, viennese waltz, foxtrot and quickstep likely) - you may discover one you didn't even know you'd love!
Settle on your style, pick a song, if you liked your instructor you've got your man (or woman). If not, the studio could find you someone else. For a basic basic dance, give it at least 4 sessions (go once a week, and do practice at home). If you really want a snazzy routine, give it 12.
Expect to pay in the range of $70 to $85 an hour for your private lessons. Most places have "wedding choreography" packages, where you get a good deal because they throw in a group class or two, free admission to a studio party, stuff like that. But personally, I'd take some group classes first to be sure you like the dance before dealing with someone trying to sell you a package.
