Dissertation writing in Germany sounds like a fantastic idea.  A lot better than writing a dissertation in Ohio, at least.  ;-)  I was in Lindenberg, which is a 20,000-person town about a 2-hour train ride from Munich.  The bigger town near there is Lindau, which is right on Lake Constance (the Bodensee).  It was absolutely gorgeous there!  I haven't been to Dusseldorf, but I really liked Berlin and had a good time in Munich and a bunch of other small Southern towns I visited on day trips.

Sun, that sounds like complete and utter hell. I am hoping my ability to sleep in any moving vehicle will aide me on the return flight! Luckily I took 2 days off of work after we get back to recover.

Presenting first thing in the morning after those flights sounds like some sort of cruel and unusual punishment.  I don't honestly know what institution my colleague works at.  She only recently move there after spending most of her career at EAWAG, a research institution in Switzerland.  My field is environmental chemistry, specifically phytoremediation (using trees to clean up pollution from soil), but this colleague does ecotoxicology (how dangerous pollutants are to living things) which is a logical extension of my work.  What field are you in?

Mine is completely different! I've got a background in psychology, but I'm enrolled for my PhD through the school of Medicine (paediatrics) and I'm studying abusive head trauma (aka shaken baby syndrome) using somewhat of an epidemiological approach.

Wow, Sun!  That seems like a logical jump, considering how much neurology is taught to psychology students.  Neurology was another field that I seriously considered pursuing, but then I found out how queasy I get with cutting animals open.  :-(  It seems like your work could be really sad, looking at the damage that is done to children by their parents...
