engagement pics

I keep reading about engagement photos, and never really gave it much thought until this weekend when I met a photographer whose personality I just loved. So now I'm reading about e-pics and everything says you should use the photographer who will be doing your wedding so that you can get to know each other. The problem with that 1) is that we haven't chosen a photographer (our wedding isn't until 12-31-10) and 2) we don't live near where the wedding will be so I can almost guarantee the photographer I met would not be the one to do our wedding because we couldn't afford her travel expenses. Is it weird or bad call, or whatever, to use a different photographer for e-pics? I understand the reasons for using the same photographer for both, but are there reasons for NOT doing the pics with different people?Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Re: engagement pics

  • you don't have to use the same photographer.

  • You don't have to do a formal e-pic.  Could a friend take some for you?  Our e-pic was done right after he proposed.  We were on a cliff and a couple showed up right after and took our pic.  It was perfect.
  • No, I think especially being away from your ceremony location, you're fine using different photographers.  FI's dad & stepmom will be our wedding photographers, our friend did our e-pics.

  • you dont have to use the same one.not to make you nervous, but i would book your wedding photog ASAP.  you are getting married NYE, a popular wedding date (at least around here).
  • Using the same photographer for epics and wedding is just a bonus if you can. If you want epics, either use the photographer that you just met and liked or find someone who you would be comfortable taking pics of you. I think e-pics are fun and a great way to get comfortable in front of the camera for the wedding if you're not a big picture-taker. It was nice to see how H and I posed in pictures, in relation to how we felt we were posing or standing about. I love our e-pics, even better than our wedding pics.

  • We didn't use the same photog for our e-pics. Our wedding photographer provided free e-pics, but since we already had them, we got her to add another hour to our ceremony for free instead.
  • We got epics in our package, so that's why we did them.  It's not a requirement to use the same person.  In fact, it's kind of cool to use someone different, in terms of different styles and POVs, etc. Ditto on booking a photog, like, soon.
  • We got our e-pics taken this weekend by a friend who is trying to build her portfolio, so they were FREE! Can't beat free.. SHe does not feel like she has the necessary equipment and experience to shoot our wedding, so we have a different photographer friend who said he would do it. IMO, it was fun to shoot with a friend behind the lens, because we were more relaxed and natural, and she knew our facial expressions, mannerisms, etc. Id suggest finding a friend with a digital camera and an eye for good lighting and just let them snap away. You should be looking for a photog now for your wedding, but you can negotiate a lower price if you don't need e-pics.
