Good morning....   Quick question,   How did you DH like living on the yacht?

DH was send a text from a guy asking him if he would be interested in being the chef of his new yacht (I've heard upwards of 300 ft, but not sure).   They have not talked money yet, but I wanted to hear your DH's experiences.

No problem.  If his answer is really long and drawn out, would it be OK to send you the long version via message?

    yes

  • H says to ask:
Is there a Crew Chef?  If not he'll end up beng just a cook..
Is it Private or Charter?  If it's private he'll know what to expect.  If it';s charter he'll have to put up with obscure pain in the ass requests
    Are you going with him?

H says he's been living on boats for the past 20 years, so it really wasn't a big deal for him.  Just on the yachts, he had a chef and clean sheets and laundry every day.
He says on a lot of the yachts you see the world through a port hole.  H got lucky and had owners that made them go out and see the places they went to.  The owner and Capt can make the experience great or miserable.

  • Is there a Crew Chef?  If not he'll end up beng just a cook.. Not sure what you mean, so I'm not sure.

Is it Private or Charter?  If it's private he'll know what to expect.  If it';s charter he'll have to put up with obscure pain in the ass requests  I've heard it will be chartered out.   But they can't be any more stupid crazy requests he gets now.

Are you going with him? way too early.    Basically the owner is a whack from Austrailia of all places.   He is here quite often for work (one of his companies is located here).  DH cooks for him and his buisness partners often.  He just texted DH the other day out of the blue about being the chef of the boat (not sure it's even finished yet).   They have not talked since.  So there are a lot of thigs that need to be discussed.

DH is getting down at work right now. So I think this opportunity is sounding good because he is not happy at work right now (it's the longest he has worked in one place and he is getting ansty).   This could be just a passing phase, but I was wondering what your DH's experiences were like.

btw - this guy is VERY generous, he gives the staff $1500 tips quite often, flip side you have to put up with his craziness.

  • A Crew Chef, is the chef that ONLY cooks for the crew. So when the boat is without passengers, the Crew Chef is the one that cooks for the crew during watch rotations in the middle of the night.

I think all RAOs (Rich Ass Owners) are slight whack jobs and crazy.

H says he generally had good experiences, but it's utilmately the capt and Crew that can make or break it.  On a yacht that large there will be crew politics galore.  While I;'m sure your DH has the same politics right now, the difference is, it will all take place in 300 feet, 900 miles form nowhere, with no place for anyone to go.

  • Very true about the politics.  Actually that is what I would be worried about.

So another question is  - What kind of questions should he ask the owner?  Neither one of us as been in this type of position and I would not even know what to negotiate for or know what's standard.

  • H asked if he could email you tomorrw via my FB account?  He's nodding off as I type.
