Flying help

It's been years since I've flown, and I'm sort of confused about Delta's checked bag policy.

Nashville to San Antonio, so am I reading this right that I'll have to pay $25? For one checked bag?

As long as it's less than 50 lbs, yes.
American is the same way, We paid 25 eadh for our honeymoon.

  • Yep, you're reading it right.  Most major airlines with the exception of Southwest charge for your first checked bag (you usually have to pay on your way there AND back too)

If you are going for a few days, try to stick to a carry on

If you are flying coach, then yup.

Also?  Put all your liquids in a ZIPLOC bag.  TSA at Philly International confiscated all my toiletries last week because they were in a different kind of plastic bag.  I was - ahem - angry.
  • How will I have to pay that if the school has already paid for our flights through a purchase order? Will they ask for money when I get there?
    image
  • When you check in to get your boarding pass they will ask if you have checked baggage.  When you say yes, they will ask for payment.

<div>Crap man. Flying has gotten expensive. We'll only be there three full days. I think I will try to get away with a carry-on.</div>

  • Yup, when you check your bags at the airport, it will ask for a credit card to pay the baggage fee.  Remember, it's $25 each way, so you'll have to pay the $25 charge again when you are checking them for your return flight.

  • More than likely when you go to get your tickets and it asks you to check a bag, the people at the ticketing counter can help you out.  Often I just give them my credit card when I fly with frequent flyer miles but need to check a bag that's not covered.

TSA: Do you have a Ziploc bag?
    Me: No.  Do you?
TSA: You can't fly with these in this bag, ma'am.

    Yup

And 25 bucks is cheap, lol.  I think lots of airlines charge more.

  • That sounds about right, although I honestly thought it was even more than that.

For domestic flights they expect you to fit everything you need onto a carry on or pay for a checked bag. International fights do get one free checked bag. The really sucky thing is that Hawaii is considered a domestic flight because it's part of the USA so you have to pay for your checked bag. Which is stupid.
  • Do you have to check a bag?

Sometimes you have no choice, but I avoid it at all costs.  I'm even going on a 8 day trip to Europe with only a carry-on.

[QUOTE]Yes, they will ask you to pay at check in. I would try to get everything into a carryon if it is possible. You get a carryon and a personal item. I always use my laptop bag, which is huge, but still counts.

<div>No, I just didn't realize that's how it was now. The last time I flew was about five years ago, and I don't really remember having to pay for checked baggage. So I was investigating.</div><div>

That's weird. They're always offered at DFW.<div>Sometimes I put them in one before I leave...but I have to be super prepared before I think of that. Usually I am not that prepared. </div>

  • As long as you can fully store under the seat in front of you, it should work as your personal item.  Remember that purses count as a personal item.
I typically shove mine into a larger "personal item" bag

  • I'm glad you brought up the liquids thing Joy because I had forgotten about required liquid sizes too. Guess I need to go to wal-mart to get trial size stuff.

    Any other tips?

  • If the school paid for your ticket, check the ticket.  You can prepay for a checked bag sometimes (or is that during online check-in?).  Dang now I'm confused.  Never mind I think it's when you check-in online.

Anyway, welcome to the joys of modern flying!  Everyone rushes to be the first people on the plane because the overhead bins get full with everyone carrying on and not checking (due to the fees).  It sucks!  My husband loves to check so that he doesn't have to deal with that nonsense.  Although since it costs money to check, he just likes to hang back and wait for the flight attendants to announce "We are out of overhead bin space.  Please bring all other bags to the front so that they can be checked to your final destination."  That way you don't get charged for checking the bag.  Of course you do have to wait for your bag later.

    UGH!!  I HATE IT!

  • for only 3 days, just take a carry-on.   Just pack smart, that's all.  Pack one suit with 3 different tops.  Shoes that can be worn with all the outfits.  Stuff like that.

  • Yeah, you'll be fine with a carry-on for three days.  Like others said, just make sure that your liquids are 3.4 oz or less and in a one quart bag.

    http://www.tsa.gov/311/

When you go through security, take your laptop and liquids out of your bag.  A laptop must be in a bin by itself going through the xray machine.  Take off your shoes and coat (doubt you'll have one).  If you have a belt with a big buckle, it might set it off.  Mine always does, so I always put it in the bin, too.

Good luck!!!  And have fun at your conference.  A bunch of teachers being crazy?  Sounds like a great time.

I just realized this week when reviewing an employees travel that some airlines make you pay for baggage to Canada and Mexico.  So not all international is free.  United didn't charge us for baggage to Mexico in February, so this is just some airlines.

And don't forget that Spirit Airlines is now charging for carry-on luggage.

I just check the airlines site right before the trip nowadays.

Don't even get me started on how crazy TSA is and how each airport seems to have it's own rules.

My eyes just bugged out of my head.  Flying is nothing like it used to be... meaning, classy.

MP - I am totally the person who hangs back and lets the stewards plane-side check her rollybag.  No charge, no fuss.  I also like to check my bags so I don't have to deal with them.  My husband is the exact opposite.  Ah well :-)

I love VB, and the clothiness (is that a word?) of her bags make them light, so you can cram more stuff in them.

I suggest having all the stuff you'll want to use on the plane in your 'personal item' and everything else in the carry-on, since you'll likely store that one in the overhead bin.  I like to keep books, socks (so I don't have to wear my shoes on the plane) and my little toiletries in the personal item under the seat.

If you do decide to check a bag, be SURE to put your jewelry in your purse or carry-on.  I made that mistake once and had a bunch of nice jewelry stolen out of my luggage.

Joy, you are apparently my husband, and I am your husband.  Although lately I've been bringing softsided duffles as my carryon.  They fit much more easily than rolly bags.
