Is it bad form (as a guest) to wear a cream colored, patterned dress?

I'm going to a wedding in June where my sister will be a bridesmaid. I'm not close with the bride although we know each other because she is a friend of my older sister. I found a cute dress online that would complement my body shape, but it is cream colored. It doesn't look like a wedding dress (above the knee, long sleeved, button down the front, colored polka dots) but I am a little dubious.

Here is a link to the actual dress:

Thoughts?

I wouldn't.  If the polka dots were all over or the cream was really a background color for a bolder pattern that would be fine.  But I think it's a little too close to white for me.

  • I wouldn't...that's mainly cream.

  • love the dress but absolutely would not wear it to a wedding.
  • Yeah, I don't think you should. Yeah, it has color on it, but only a little.
  • It doesn't have enought colour for me.  I wouldn't wear that to a wedding.

  • Agree with PP.  I think it has too much cream.  I wore a white dress with gold polka dots to a wedding last year (my college friend and their wedding was the colors of our school-black & gold) and even though it wasn't all white and I wore black cardigan, I still felt a little awkward.  I think you would feel better wearing something different, especially if you are already questioning it.

  • No way. You'll look like a jackass even if the bride doesn't care.

I think it is way too white.  I'm sure you can find another cute and flattering dress that will be a more appropriate color.

  • Another vote for no.  And for future, if you are ever in doubt, just say no to that too. You don't want to risk being known as "The girl who wore white to so-and-so's wedding."
  • Agreed, find another event to wear it to, because it is really cute.

  • Noted! Thank you for the replies.
  • Show us what you choose. I like to see pretty dresses :)
  • I'd go with no. Not just because it's mostly white, but also because (in my opinion, anyway) it's not really a wedding appropriate dress. It seems much more casual. I guess it just depends on the formality of the wedding.
  • I'm going to be the odd man out and say you could wear it.  The style of the dress isn't formal enough to look anything like a wedding dress and it's not a very bright cream.  I honestly wouldn't think anything of it if I saw someone in that dress at a wedding.

I'll also add that I have a Miss Manners wedding book- I pretty sure I remember reading that it is acceptable to wear white to a wedding, but you shouldn't wear black.  Go figure.

  • my thoughts are more practical. Long sleeves + June + New Orleans (i'm just assuming that's where the wedding is) = unbearable!

  • Too much white/cream.  There are SOOOO many other colors available, which is why it's never in good fashion to choose the ONE that you know the bride will be wearing.

  • Really cute dress but I'm going to agree with everyone else....a little too much white/cream for a wedding.  Though the style isnt formal and it doesn't look like a wedding dress thats not really the point.

It's too bad it isn't offered in another color...it really is a cute dress!

I'm going to a June wedding and I found a dress at The Limited. Well, I found 3 that I bought so I could narrow it does (ordered them online so I'll ship back the ones I don't wear).  Try there website.  They have a lot of different styles and a bunch are on sale right now.

  • I wouldn't wear it.  Seriously, there are so many other colors to choose from.  Save this dress for a graduation, birthday, baby shower, etc.

If the bride is wearing white or cream, most people would steer away from wearing those colors.  I wore a dusty blue dress at my wedding, one of my aunts wore a white dress (summer, outdoor wedding); I thought she looked fabulous!
