OB/GYN Question-Not TIM

Don't worry, no grossness or asking you to diagnose me ;)

I need to get my BC script and my yearly exam done. When I first started at 16, I went to my male regular doctor. When I went to college, I just went to the University clinic. Now I'm ready for a big girl doctor, in my new town.

Is the dr. that gives you your exam the same type that delivers babies? Ideally, I'd like to find one that works with me up until I'm ready to have babies in a couple of years. Even more, I'd like to find one that is pro-natural birth and letting my body, not medicine and crowded hospitals dictate the birth.

How in the world do I go about finding one? I need to get my script filled this month, so I don't have much time...

Re: OB/GYN Question-Not TIM

  • Do you have a regular dr where you are now?  They can suggest someone that specializes in OB/GYN

Otherwise when I moved to Columbus I asked some coworkers if they had drs they liked or would suggest.

  • The Dr that gives you your exam CAN be the same one who works with you during your pregnancy. Go for your exam, and if you like the Dr you see, ask him/her if they can do that. If not, they can recommend someone.
  • Some are just GYN, but I think most are OB/GYN.  If you have any friends in the area you could ask them about their doctors.

If you're pressed for time, your old GYN might be able to call in a one month supply script to a local pharmacy for you to give you more time.

LVB I go to All Women OBGYN in Norton Suburban: http://www.allwomenobgyn.com/

They have five female doctors there and I've heard that when you're pregnant they make sure you meet with every one so you know all of them. I'm not sure about their natural birth practices, but I really like my doctor.

My doc will deliver my baby if we're still in Louisville when I'm preggo. I'm pretty sure all of the docs in the practice do both OB and GYN. I found her by looking up doctors through my insurance's website. I had to find her when I was new in town as well so I just looked to see if a bunch of women had the same number and called there. I would call their office or another if you find one and ask them about their practices.

I'll email you my doc's name.

This.  If it is an OB-GYN, they do both.  If it is just a GYN, you're going to have a different doctor deliver you.

And, obviously, it's not definite on the date you give birth your OB will be available, but that's just goes with the territory.

Ask around for recommendations.  That's how I've always found one!
  • I don't have a doctor here yet. I had a physical in my at the university and haven't had a need to go to one since.

  • Also, I"m pretty sure you can work with a Midwife and an OB when you're preggo. I might be completely wrong on this, but I think the OB would make sure mommy and baby are healthy and then the Midwife will help with the birth.
  • Thanks, Birdie, I'll check that out!

I guess I do need to check with my insurance.

From what I understand, Midwives are not allowed to practice in KY. I'd need to go over to Clark across the river. Which complicates things.

  • my primary care physican also can do my gyno exams.  however, she doesnt deliver babies and if she finds anything off with my gyno exams, she refers me to an OB/GYN.

i love my doctor, but i'll have to change if i ever decide to have a kid.  she's also in her mid-late 50's and i assuem she'll retire soon.  i'm bummed abotu that.

IMO, the best way to find a doc is to ask all of your friends.  dont just flip through the yellow pages.  the bad thing is that some of your friends might have great doctors - but those doctors arent accepting any new patients.

my sister used a midwife for all 4 of her children.  only one required an OB-GYN because she had some complications.  from what she told me, the midwife will only take you on if you are in optimal shape and are not a high risk pregnancy.

Dude thats crap.  I know some peeps over there if you need some recommendations.

Definitely check and double check with insurance too. I had a major headache when dealing with my chiropractor appointments earlier in the year. My doc was listed on their website but it turned out to be some phantom listing. He wasn't really in network and his office never told me.
  • I'm not Tim, so I can answer.

I'd get a referral.  That's how I got my new doctor.  I don't care who I go to for a cold, I don't need a referral for that, but lady stuff.  Oh yeah, I want to go to someone that someone I trust knows.  I'm weird t hat way though.

You're not weird I'm the same way. I think I've been to my regular doc here one or twice since I moved here. I barely remember how to get to her office. However I know exactly where my lady doctor is and how to get ahold of her GYN nurse.

I called and they said they accept it, so I hope that's right? I've never had to use his insurance, so I have no idea how to even check that.

  • you have to check with your insurance company.  ideally, speak to HR who can check with the rep for your company.  sometimes even the general people you get on the 800 line dont know the specifics of your company's plan the way your rep will.
  • Yep that's right! If you called my doc's office, they're good about letting you know whats up with insurance. There was a dispute a year or so ago between Norton and Anthem not playing nicely with each other. They made sure to let their patients know what was and wasn't covered in their office. That's been resolved thankfully.

I think my chiropractor's office people were just idiots. I checked my insurance's website and it had him listed. I called his office and asked if they accept XYZ Insurance. They said yes. After 2 months of appointments I finally get the claims back from insurance saying they weren't being covered. I call my chiropractor upset and they're like "Yes we accept XYZ...... but we're out of network." I was like HELLO that would have been helpful info two months ago!!!
  • My regular doc, the one I recommended, did my annual lady exam and wrote the script for my BC pills.  It was the same when I was in Lexington.  Most PCPs will do the exam, and if something irregular comes up, they refer you to a GYN for followup.  No need to go to the GYN unless you prefer them or are trying to find and build a relationship with a future OB.
