Invite all to dinner? or some? BIG Family...

My FI is from Ontario and has a big family.  He wants to invite some people to the dinner (150) and some just for cocktails after(80).  He says that in his family this is how it has always been done given the numbers.   Is this odd because I really would rather save more, pay more and have everyone for dinner....??  Is it unexceptable to not invite all to dinner??

  • Yes, you can tell your FI that's a pretty bad idea.  How would you feel if you only got invited for cocktails and found out other people got invited for dinner?  That's like flat out telling the cocktail people, "We like your presents, but we don't like you enough to invite you to dinner"

  • I think it's rude and tacky to invite people to only half of the reception.  The reception is one event, not two.  So in my opinion, if you invite someone, they need to be invited ot the whole thing.

  • You are right. Your FI is wrong. Have everyone for dinner.
  • His argument just means his family has been doing it wrong for YEARS.
  • True, Think I just need to hear it from a strangers  (more objective)..Thanks :)
  • Yup! Go ahead and invite only the important ones to dinner. That'll show them!

  • Yes, very inappropriate. Cut down your budget in any other way possible, floral arrangements, extravagance of food, etc...good luck!
