The 19 Days of Harry Potter: 16 Days to Go!

Look at that! We magically jumped down 2 days overnight!

So this was brought up a little yesterday, but what differences between the books and the movies really grind your gears?

• Your sig gives me chills!!!!

I'll be back momentarily with my answer. :)
• I hate how they completely left Winky out. I had to explain so much to DH after seeing Goblet of Fire, because it made absolutely no sense. And I really think it's only going to complicate things in the end and cause even more changes.

• Skipping the big fight that happens while Dumbledore and Harry are getting the horcrux from the cave.

How they did parseltongue for the movies...I did not like it at all.

Hermione was too pretty too fast. I think someone said that yesterday.

• I'm like halfway through GOF right now, and I seem to be remembering that Barty Crouch's son is actually Mad Eye Moody, right? And that's who put Harry's name in the goblet, right? In the movie, Karkaroff did it, I think. Crap, I can't even really remember any right now. That's just on my mind because I'm reading GOF again.

• Leaving out the whole Bill & Fleur stuff. I guess it's not pertinant to the story REALLY, but I liked it.

• No, Barty did it in the movie, too.

Fail for me :( I saw the movies so long after I read the books that I had a hard time spotting even glaring differences. Liking and watching the movies is a relatively new thing for me.

• I hate that they left the entire plotline of Gryffindor winning the Quiddich Cup in POA. The whole scene at the Weasley's house during HBP (the movie) pissed me off as well because that did NOT happen!
• Leaving out: Peeves, Winky and the elder Weasley brothers. Minimizing Kreacher to effectively being a cameo in the 5th movie.

In the third movie when they left out that Gryffindor finally won the Quidditch Cup, because that's such a fantastic moment. Also when Lupin catches Harry with the Marauder's Map, they made zero effort to acknowledge that it was odd that he knew it was a map. That bugged me. I wish they'd shown more of the Quidditch World Cup match in the 4th.
• Also, I'd just like to add that since I don't have a ticker and will not be putting one in my sig, you can all use the HP countdown to count down to my wedding as well. It's the 20th. I know you're all REALLY CONCERNED about it :) I actually am concerned, as I can't figure out how I'm going to be able to see the movie during all the wedding hoopla. I need a time turner.

• LC!!!! I am so excited for you. Sadly, I doubt I'll be crashing, but I want you to know I tried really hard. I'll be there in spirit!
• Everything Manda said.

Also that the Beauxbatons girls were just normal looking.

OH!!! And the fact that the Gaunts aren't explored in the movies. I mean, that is what makes Voldy tick. Come on!

I don't like Cho, but the movies sold that chick out.
• Thanks Manda :) When I start feeling like I'm gonna cry (which will probably be all day, I couldn't even read the ceremony wording email I got yesterday from my uncle, who's officiating, without getting teary), I will think of your sig :) The Weasly cats are adorable.

• I think visiting more of Tom Riddle's memories would help the movies and explain Voldemort and why he's so dangerous that much better.

I didn't like that either, but they did that onpurpose because they didn't want 6 and 7 to basically be repeats of each other. I also didn't like that Harry didn't see all of Dumbledore's memories.

• LC!!!!!!! SO CLOSE!!!!!! I was like that too, LC. I couldn't hear ANY of the ceremony music without tearing up. I did cry during the ceremony, but that just added to the specialness (not a word) of the whole thing, you know?
• Meh. I could deal with all of the crap that the movies messed up, but what literally left me yelling out loud in the theater was Harry & Ginny's first kiss.

I was livid. My friend and I saw the midnight show and I seriously thought we were gonna have a kaniption. Ya don't mess with Harry and Ginny's first ANYTHING.

I'm just going to tell the makeup lady to use the best waterproof mascara she knows of and hope for the best. The thing is, I know my dad will get leaky and then I'll lose it. But, if me crying is the worst thing that happens that day, then we're in good shape. I'm going to stop threadjacking HP now. Sorry guys.

Yes! I did not like that at all. I was so sad that they left out the entire relationship pretty much too. They kissed once, and that was it, except Hermione said Ron was ok with it at the end of the movie. From what I can tell from the trailers/still shots, it plays more in this movie, which makes me happy. I also can't wait for the Ron/Hermione scenes.

• I was really disappointed by the third movie. If I hadn't read Prisoner, then I wouldn't have had any idea why it was significant that Harry's Patronus is a stag, nor would I have understood the connection between James, Sirius and Lupin. The Marauders thing was never fully explained, and that was a huge let down for me. In the book, the "big reveal" brought tears to my eyes. In the movie, it wasn't even there.

• I hated that scene in the Burrow in the 6th movie. I still don't know why the felt the need to add that. I sat there in the theater really confused as to why they would burn the Burrow and have Harry & Ginny chase Bellatrix & the wherewolf (can't remember his name right now) around. Seemed really pointless and didn't add anything.

• Burning down the Burrow. WTF was that? At least they'll still have the wedding (I'm assuming) Also, I was very pissed they didn't have Dumbledore's funeral in the movie. I guess we'll have to wait for that one too.

In a general, I get that you cannot reasonably transfer written word to movie exactly the same. That being said - I my overall opinion is I DEPLORE when they add things that don't happen (burning down the Burrow) or change story lines that truly affect the plot (changing how they hid the book in HBP).

FI doesn't read the books - only goes to movies to indulge me. The ONLY reason I really don't mind some of the stuff they leave out is because it provides us with hours (and I mean it hours) of discussion after seeing a movie. New things come up everytime we watch one too.

EDIT - Hit post too soon.

Me too! I went to the midnight show with a friend, and I was furiously explaining to her everything they'd left out (she'd only seen the movies). It takes up a large part of the beginning of the book, but it was like a blip on the screen in the movie. Fail.
So this was brought up a little yesterday, but what differences between the books and the movies really grind your gears? I completely agree with PP about leaving out the whole Bill and Fluer thing. We miss an amazing moment During HBP when Bill's beautiful face is permanently scarred and instead of being vapid and shallow, like we thought she was, it turns out Fluer is a wonderful, loving fiance. It held a great message about not judging people and it was a shame the film makers deprived the movie-goers of that. I've watched the movies with 4 people who haven't read the books and they all said A) They all thought Harry liked Hermione. B) None of them like Ginny at all C) The whole story makes no sense and I spend more time explaining to them what's going on than they spend watching the movie. In the book series, Harry and Ginny's relationship is a slow progression. In the movie, he just suddenly sees in her in the window and wham, he's all about her. The shoe tying scene was awful and so was the Quidditch scene. In the movie she literally wipes his nose, feeds him and ties his shoelace. It makes it look like Harry has mommy issues. Ginny was portrayed as the complete opposite of how she was in the books. I didn't like how they didn't push enough of the cruelty in OotP movie. What I mean is, in the books Umbridge put the students' lives in real danger. They even tried to implement corporal punishment. And they couldn't go to their parents because all communication was cut off. None of that was addressed in the film at all. All we saw in the film was a strict teacher who I actually found myself agreeing with. She hitched up some guys pants and made them wear their uniforms properly and told people they couldn't snog in the hallways. Hardly the worst thing in the world. Those four movie goers didn't think she was a threat at all. The whole "I'm not an owl!" scene in GoF. Ron asks Hermione to deliver a message to Harry for him, but when Harry asks her to deliver a reply, she freaks out on him. And the random scene with the two of them on the bridge (right before Cedric Diggory tells Harry to take a bath). And the scene where Hermione yells at Harry to go to bed. Umm, ok, mom. WTF? I really think the fourth director (Mike Newell) shipped Harry and Hermione. There was much more tension between those two than anything. And all four of those movie goers are honestly confused. Hermione getting drunk in HBP. Yeah, butterbeer seems to do a number on house-elves, but, really? Students getting drunk in pubs with teachers? Good call, David Yates. The cuts Chris Columbus made in CoS was very unfortunate. He left out the fact that the basilisk was going after muggle-borns.... they cut the scenes with Justin and Colin introducing themselves as muggle-borns, so it looks like the "creature" is going after random students.
Posted by Simply Fated
The day DH came out, I went to a family reunion with my grandma and cousin. I read it until I finished (and many of my relatives were as well, which I found very awesome), and my cousin asked me if Harry and Hermione got married. When I told him Harry had married Ginny, he was like "WHAT?!" He had only seen the movies, and he was convinced they were meant to be (but then again, so was I...I spent WAY too much time on the Leaky Cauldron back in the day...and writing HP fanfics...)

And I agree about the audience not knowing the attacked students were all Muggle-born. It's kind of an important thing to know.

• Chris Columbus tried to create tension between Hermione and Ron in CoS by having that awkward handshake at the end, but because Hermione hugged Harry and not Ron, I thought it was the other way around. Like, she hugged Harry because she liked him, ya know? And it was Harry she ran to first, not Ron. I was really confused.
DOn't worry, the next day at school my friend told me I was wrong about that lol.
I know Chris Columbus had good intentions, but I think his subtlety missed the mark on that one.
After seeing PoA I finally read the books, so I'm all up to speed now. But I can see why movie-goers would be confused because I certainly was.
