Silicone Cookware

So...I've been having this problem.

Every time I use my Big Top Cupcake pan, the smoke detector goes off.

I used a silicone pan for the muffins, and just now, the smoke detector went off.

Does this happen to anyone else when using silicone cookware? It's a little aggravating, and I'm just wondering if I'm alone.

Re: Silicone Cookware

  • Do you live in an apartment?
  • I don't think this is normal.  The first time I used mine, it smelled kind of funny, but seemed fine for subsequent uses.

If you are cooking at a high temp, in a small kitchen space, with the smoke detector that is in or close to the kitchen, then maybe the fumes are setting off the detector.  I would wonder if you're cooking at a high temp (over 400), if you used a lot of no stick spray, or if the oven needs cleaning.

You might try gettng more ventilation in the kitchen, and check to see if you have some instructions that came with the product, or try Googling it on line.  I would worry about fumes being unhealthy around pets or children.
  • Well, I have no pets or kids, so that's off the checklist.

The big-top cupcake thing bakes at 350, and it goes off. The muffins today were baked at 400. My smoke detector is really close to the kitchen, though our apartment has a pretty open layout.

It could be due to non-stick spray. I do put it on there (per instructions) so maybe that's what's making the difference.

If you enlarge this picture, I drew an arrow to where the smoke detector is, but you can see that it's an open kitchen.

    IDK. It's just really annoying.

  • Thanks, bel. :)

If you're wanting to adventure more into it, there are pictures in my married bio.
  • Sorry, I got totally sidetracked after I asked you that.  I was going to say that it could just be the apt smoke alarms.  I pretty much take mine down anytime I cook or bake anything just in case.

Other than that I got nothin, I have a muffin pan that has a metal frame and silicon cups, but it's never set it off.
  • A con to living in fancy shmancy apartments: The smoke detectors don't come off easily AND they're all synced together.

I mean, in the case of a fire that's a handy aspect, but when it goes off just due to cooking, it's really annoying.
  • Is that smoke detector like, 6 feet away from the stove?  I would sooo be moving that away from the cooking area.

But if you can't move it, you could try putting a damp towel over it before using the oven.

Nice looking place, by the way.

i haven't had problems with my silicon stuff.  Is there any foodstuff on your baking sheets or in your oven that might be burning while you're baking?
  • Nope. Clean as a whistle.
  • The last house we rented had a smoke alarm in the doorway between the kitchen and dinning room.  It went off all the freaking time!!!  Every time I baked and opened the oven door, when I would sauté things in a pan, or pan fry something!!!  We ended up taking it down, and just putting it back up before we moved.  We had another smoke alarm in the hallway before the bedrooms, so I wasn't too worried.
