  • Yea, and then Bec would say "I am Martha Stewart but like a model!!"
  • Did you just call me a model? Damn girl. Ya cut me deep.
  • WHERE IS MY PSYCHOlogist CARD?!
  • Sun, you should have gotten one promptly after gradutaing university. It must have gotten lost in the mail.

  • I just got a lousy degree. No card included.

Obviously I didn't apply to the right mail-order university.

  • Mryan and psichick should hang out.

Expat, really?  I hope you're joking.  There was in article in Cosmo or Glamour in the last few months about people who take prescription meds without a script and how dangerous it is.  Please don't do it.

  • difference is i actually am trained and have more than a BA.

i teach college psych, it scares me that these people are actually out in the world working with clients with no further training. a semester course in abnormal psych doesn't make you an expert in ANYTHING. most people with BA's in psych end up in human resources, that should tell you about how well trained they are in psych lol

as to the original question.....you're a fucking idiot. psychotropic drugs are not things to mess around with. people treat these drugs as if they're candy without thoughts to the side effects (which there are many, as with any drug really). get off your lazy ass and do what you need to do. popping pills is not the answer to your problems.
  • To answer the question: yes, it would help.

It is a good idea? Probably not. The girl I knew in college who most advocated using Ritalin to study was also a borderline drug addict (mostly cocaine, which in a way is like illegal Ritalin). It's prescription for a reason - if you really think you have some form of ADD, I'd suggest going to a doctor rather than just popping pills that might have side effects.

Yeah because HR is full of fuucking idiots.
  • The overgeneralization and asshattery in this post tickles me. Let's all just agree that a psych class does not a psychologist/psychiatrtist make, and anyone that actually thinks they should take medication because they are a lazy bum deserves a swift kick in the head. In fact, I'm fairly certain my 16 week old fetus is more intelligent than the OP.

  • How can someone with an almost-PhD not know how to use a shift key?
  • FI's groomswoman takes Adderral, with a prescription, for weight loss. I am extrememly jealous, and I feel that I have been undiagnosed ADD all my life, but I'd rather be fat and scatterbrained than have my mind controlled by a drug.

FWIW, I was having trouble concentrating and stopped consuming aspartame and it has made a big difference. I am still technically lazy, but now I can concentrate better on projects at work without my mind running 200mph.

  • I think thats interesting you say that sarapliz, about the aspartame. I dont know why you (OP) wouldnt think to alter your diet FIRST before taking pills. Doing something in a healthy way rather than chemically. What the hell kind of logic is that. Its the "I want results now so gimmie a quick fix so I dont have to be patient" mentality our society has that has royally fucked it up.

[QUOTE]How do you know if you need it?  You go to a doctor who specializes in Adult ADD and you make an appointment. This is why so many people discredit ADD as a real disease, because people who aren't diagnosed with it want to use ritalin or adderall to overcome being lazy.

I have nothing to add, however, this quote made me laugh considering Tree has a sloth for a sig.  It seemed too appropriate.

I also think it's funny that anyone would approach a wedding related message board with a question about prescription drugs.  And that someone who can't spell the name of a drug indicated that studies show it's effective in increasing concentration.

  • Oh I'm so glad there was some funny in this post because the rest of it made me want to roll my eyes, gasp in disbelief and throw something heavy at Expat. Possibly all at the same time. What a joke.

  • It will help make you not lazy, as in hyper. For people who actually have ADHD, it can make them actually focus. For the rest of us, it will make us sort of jumpy. Which, cocaine or meth can do too! Mmm, battery acid.

I love you Bec. :) Also, psichick, is this an example of the empathic responses you learned in that extra post-BA training? I bet your students feel totally nurtured under your brash tutelage.

That said, expat please tell me you're kidding. Of course ritalin and adderall make you focused in the beginning... so does meth or any other stimulant. You can get a crapload of stuff done and have energy for days. And I'm sure most people don't find themselves addicted to stimulants by planning to become addicted. They tell themselves they are going to do it only once in awhile for a quick pick-me-up or to focus. There's a reason kids in college sell their ADHD meds to their peers... it's exactly like speed if you do not have the unique brain chemistry that reacts appropriately to these meds. Please consider other options before this.

  • Are people actually able to find doctors to prescribe them ADHD meds because they're lazy and have trouble getting things done?  I mean, I guess it shouldn't surprise me, I know how overdiagnosed and medicated ADHD is, but really?
  • For the right price, J&K, I'm afraid some doctors will do anything.

    Which is pathetic and sad.

Sadly yes. It bugs me the most with kids. When I worked in a community health clinic at an elementary school, the nurse practitioner frequently started kids on Adderall regimens. She would run a Vanderbilt Scale, determine ADHD, and then prescribe meds through the school to 8 or 9 year old kids! Some of the kids were my therapy cases, and they had emotional problems and/or trauma/anxiety disorders, none of which stopped this process or ADHD diagnosis. Most of the time the parents would accept the meds, because they trusted the NP that they would help their kid get better. It sucked.

  • True story.  It is sad.  I can't imagine someone coming in and saying "Help, I'm lazy.  I want legal speed," and the doctor saying OK!  Coming right up!

No, actually I can imagine it.  In a perfect, ETHICAL world, I can't imagine it.  I mean, shiit, I'm lazy too.  But I still manage to get crap done that needs to be done without medication.  PLUS I even have ADD.

Our society's dependence on the quick fix scares me shiitless.
  • Yeah, take ritalin every day. You'll probably get anxiety problems, so take some pills for that too. But make sure these dont cause sleep problems, then you'll need sleeping pills. Of course these might cause morning fatigue, so take some provigil. But don't take the provigil the same time as the ritalin or you'll probably have heart problems. But don't worry, they make pills for high blood pressure.

  • Beatles, my friend worked a day care, and one of the kids was diagnosed with ADHD and medicated.  But the girl was violent (pushing, headbutting, kicking other kids AND the day care workers) and liked to throw screaming tantrums (she was 10) and argue with everyone and just be belligerant and obnoxious.  At what point do you say...Hmmm maybe something else is going on here?  With my (non-expert) psych knowledge I could easily come up with at least 4 or 5 other possible diagnoses, along with a whole host of other problems (like bad parenting possibly).  Obviously I don't know her full history and would never say "Oh, she obviously has THIS" because of that, and because I'm not qualified to do so, but it seemed so obvious to me that ADHD wasn't the real problem.
