WR - Absolutely ridiculous

So I went in for my first fitting today at the bridal shop where I bought my dress. To have my dress hemmed, the bodice brought in a bit and straight-stitched (to lie a little flatter), the side brought in a bit, and a French bustle put in is FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS.  That's more than half of what the damn dress itself cost. The hem alone was two hundred bucks!!  And there is NO beading or lace or design or anything on the skirt of the dress.  It's just plain silk.  She said it's because there are four layers to hem (an underskirt, a built-in little crinoline-type thing, another underskirt and the overskirt).  But don't most dresses have more than one layer to hem??  Freaking ridiculous.  I think I got hosed.

And I wanted to go to a local seamstress, who probably would have been half that if not less, but my mom flipped out with the "but if she ruins it, what will you dooooooooo???  You don't knoooooooow her, and she works out of her home.  What if it burns down??? At least this way the bridal shop ruins it they'll be able to order you another one."  She was paying, so whatever, but still I think she just wasted about $250 dollars for no reason.

Re: WR - Absolutely ridiculous

  • I cut out my crinolone, got it hemmed, took in the side 2 inches and got a 3 point bustle for $200. I know it's kind of a regional thing but $500 seems ridiculous. That's exatly why I didn't go to a bridal shop for my alterations.
  • Yup...alterations are notriously ridiculous at bridal shops.  Bleh.
  • That does sound ridiculous. Ugh. I don't even want to know what alterations for my dress will be. I have lace AND beading.

  • wow... I only paid $48 for a hem (only one layer).

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Sheesh, my dress cost $250 and I was so grateful that I didn't need alterations. The hem dropped perfectly and my mom did a servicable bustle. I'm thinking you got taken for a ride, but at least it wasn't your money right?
  • Holy Crap, that is ridiculous. Mine was a 6 point french bustle, and hem for $125.
Do you have to go through with it? Of course that would be a weird conversation.

  • Priscilla of Boston charges a flat $300 fee for taking a hem up. A HEM. My dress has 4 or 5 layers, so pretty sure I'm just going to wear heels.

    That does suck though, Nugget.

Finding a local trusted seamstress is the way to go.  We have one on the DFW board that we all use.  I had cups sewn in, hem, and bodice taken in for $125.

Sorry to hear about your experience!
  • I really tried to get her to go to this other lady.  She's like a celebrity on my local board, everybody seems to have used her and everybody seems to have loved her.  Plus, it would save us having to drive down to Rochester two more times.  I even sat her down at the computer and showed her all the Knot married bio's that gave her rave reviews.  But she was getting so upset at the idea of some lady doing it instead of a "professional" I just said screw it.

  • Nugget, would you mind giving me the name of the woman you were considering?
  • Her name is Louise, if you go on the Mpls/St. Paul board and search, there's tons of threads about her.  She has a website, but apparently she's much easier to get ahold of via telephone.

  • Holy F.  I had similar alterations and it was about $150.

    That's ridiculous.
  • Holy cow.  I paid $30 to have a bustle put in!

  • My FMIL happens to have an 'in' with the a local seamstress, so that's where I'm going.

Too bad you couldn't talk your mom out of getting hosed, NuggetBrain.

  • Whoa that sucks!  I'm sorry!  I thought mine would be pricey because the bridal salon itself is pricey (holler for sample sizes!) and it was $140 I think for cups, hem, repair to holes made (damn sample dress and brides with claws...) and a 3 point bustle.  And it was lace.

Make sure in your vendor reviews you inform other prices how pricey that place is.  It's not necessarily a mean thing to say but I think that would be helpful information for ladies in the future.

  • Honestly. . . It doesn't seem that bad to me. Assuming your dress has a lot of layers, then they'll have to take in all of those layers properly as well, and your dress has all that ruching which has to be dealt with properly. Then also assuming a skilled seamstress earns at least $20 an hour (and that they're paying fare wages and not hiring inexperienced people), and the bridal shop of course does a markup on top of that to cover overhead and make a profit. . .  you can see where it could add up to that.
