Name Change advice

I know there are a lot of you who are already married, and all my internet searching has done me no good since everyone is saying different stuff.

Got married Saturday, so I don't yet have our marriage certificate. We're going on our honeymoon 12/19-12/28 and my passport is in my maiden name. Am I correct in assuming I:
a) can't do anything about my name change until we get the certificate copies
b) i'm best off NOT changing my name until after the honeymoon because I don't have time to change my passport
c) I should change my SS card first, then license, then bank/teaching certificate/credit cards/etc.

All my searches are telling me different stuff!

    a) True
    b) Definitely true
    c) Pretty much yes, you do have to do your SS before your driver's license, but you can do banks and credit cards at the same time.  Most credit cards will just do it over the phone.  Your bank will probably make you come in and bring your marriage certificate and new DL.  I just started calling all of them and asking what I need to show the name change, some just wanted a fax of the marriage cert.  You can get all that little stuff done in one day, not that big of a deal.

  • Yes, you're right on all three.  Definitely don't go trying to change your name before your honeymoon.  That will just screw things up and there's no reason to anyway.  I waited about 6 weeks to change my name.
  • Well, Dani took care of that one.

  • What name is on your ticket? If you got your airline ticket with your married name on it, and you don't have a new passport yet, what are your plans?
  • Yep, driver's license must match name on the ticket, definitely.

PS - I got married in a different state from where I lived, and I had to do my driver's license before SS card... You should check with YOUR state as well and their requirements.

I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew
  • The plane ticket is in my maiden name... so I figured thats why I shouldn't legally change anything yet. Glad my gut feeling was right!
