Waiting until Jan to put deposit on Venue?

FI and I went to put our deposit on our venue this weekend and the lady told us that we can't until the beginning of the year due to tax purposes. When she said it, I thought it was strange, but figured that she knew what she was talking about. The more I think about it though, the more it doesn't seem right. Does this seems at all right to you? Our wedding date is 5/21/11.

Re: Waiting until Jan to put deposit on Venue?

  • I would question the honestly of a vendor trying to make income fall in a specific time slot.  I could be wrong though.
  • I'm not really sure but that does sound odd since its less than a year away. Plus, if you wait until January, thats only 5 months before. That would make me uncomfortable.
  • um, no. unless I'm just totally missing something here this is not right and I would contact SOMEONE ELSE at the venue and discuss this. We booked our venue 2 years in advance since it is a very popular place in our area. Talk to someone as soon as possible b/c you don't want someone else coming in and booking your date. I've never known anyone who waited until 4 months before to book their venue. To me that is one of the first things you do.

  • Have you signed a contract?  Either way, if you don't pay her something you're probably not locked in.  If you don't mind waiting to be confirmed, then fine.  If you don't want to wait, tell them that, and if they don't accept it, look elsewhere.
  • We haven't signed a contract. We went about 2 months ago to look at it, went to a few other places and decided on this place. She wrote our name on the date (in her planner) in pencil and when I pulled out my checkbook she said that the deposit couldn't be paid until Jan. I guess I'll  be calling them again tomorrow because it just seems sketchy. I've known quite a few people that got married there, but haven't talked to any to see how the process went.

  • This definitely sounds suspect.

You should get a contract in place because there is a good possibility she may raise prices for 2011.
  • Most prices go up in Jan (for the new calendar year) so it could be that she is trying to lock you into those prices instead. I would see if you can talk to a manager and ask to put the deposit down and also have it written in your contract the amount you will be paying ( so she can't raise prices). But that's just me....I only trust you as far as I can see you lol.
  • If you have a contract with the current prices, I wouldn't really mind, but it might still make me nervous until January. If there's no contract, I'd look for a new place.

  • If they do revenue recognition, it will make their numbers higher for the fiscal year, but being in the business they are, I can't imagine that your wedding costs that much that it will "hurt" them and they can't accept your deposit.

I think there's something else up here! I would ask others who have had their wedding there if they had the same issue.
