To those who are married.

We always pass judgement on honeymoon registries and stuffs.  So, I'm just curious as to what you did with your monetary gifts.

Re: To those who are married.

  • we spent a good chunk on home improvements and banked the rest.  we didnt get near what some get, only because we had a very small wedding.   but we used it wisely, like any money we get.  the gifts we received were mostly gift cards for home depot and one or two for crate and barrell, etc.
  • Clarification: we didn't get any monetary gifts. In fact, we hardly got any gifts at all.
  • We spent ours on our honeymoon.

  • We already had the honeymoon cost covered before we started getting checks.  The checks went into savings or petty cash (depending on the amount), to be used in the future for whatever.  For thank you notes, I just listed things that we planned on buying in the future.
  • We bought all the stuff on our registries that people didn't buy for us. I really wanted that stuff and I spend 4 hours at BB&B setting up that registry so I thought I should have it.

  • We took about $500 for our honeymoon and minimoon combined.  And the rest went into our savings for our down payment savings.

  • Used it to pay off some debt, and then put the rest in a savings account.  We've added some to it, and use it for Fun Money.  We went on a weekend trip not too long ago, and paid for it from that account.
  • We got some gifts of cash and some checks.  We spent a lot of the cash on our honeymoon, so we didn't have to dip into the money we had set aside for it, and we're putting the remaining money and the money from the checks into our savings towards a downpayment on a house.

    How exciting! Congratulations!
  • We did not get a lot of gifts either, so we put what we got toward the flatware on our registry and a few other small kitchen items. The rest went to car repairs. Sexy, I know.
  • OMG TIDE!  ONE OF EACH.  HOW PERFECTLY PERFECT!  Is everything going well with your pregnancy?

Alix, you respond made me laugh.  I don't give a shiit about honeymoon registries either.  I think that the ones with service fees suck.  I think that the bride and groom should have to pay for any service fees, not t he person gifting something on your honeymoon.

  • We got a flat sum of money from FIL and we are spending that on our honeymoon.  The rest we put into savings.

  • Yeah I agree Mands. Besides, registries aren't saying "BUY THIS AND ONLY THIS FOR US OR WE'LL FUUCKING HATE YOU FOREVER YOU INCOMPETENT TOOL" they're just saying this is something we're interested in, if you're stuck on a gift and want to get us something, this may help you out.

Read: I did not have a honeymoon registry, but have zero issues with people who do.

  • Everything's going great.  Thank you for asking!  We went to a sonogram specialist last week because my OB thought there may have been a small problem with one of the sacs, but everything is fine.  I feel fine; starting to get a baby bump already (soon it will probably be a baby blimp).  The last couple days it's been difficult to wake up and go to work, but that's the worst of it so far.

  • Put it towards our HM :p

    Cute picture FYI!

  • We didn't get all that much money, but what we did get got put into our checking account.  It basically just paid back some of what we had paid out for the wedding, I guess.
  • We haven't actually spent it yet, but we have wedding money earmarked for a new couch, so I said we spent it on our home.

I have no problem with you spending money I give you on anything you want - registry items, HM, gambling debts, whatever. I just don't like asking for money and/or thinking I bought you a gift certificate for an activity when in fact I gave you a check. If I wanted to give you a check, I would have, ya know, given you a check.

Yeah, we're exciting like that. But it was practical.
  • I love the two babies in the pea pod in Tide's ticker. That is all.
  • Agreed Alix.  We actually had a quite a few cards with money in them that said, "Please put this towards something on your honeymoon".  One even said "don't you dare think about putting this in your savings!"

My friend got married in Septmber, I put 100euros in the card cause I knew they were going to spain and italy, and I told them to go have a nice dinner on us.  THey own a home, they have everything.  Why not right?

  • ::smokey climbs on Alix's bandwagon::

I have always said that I have no problem with a honeymoon registry.  I don't care if I buy you a massage and they give you the cash.  What difference does it make?

What if I buy you a mixer and you exchange it for martini glasses?  Or sheets for your bed of sin?  That's why I don't think the argument that people say about paying for you to have sex is salient.

  • We put some towards our honeymoon and used the rest to buy plane tickets for a trip we're taking to San Francisco in April. I don't really have a problem with honeymoon registries. It's a gift, if that's what you want, that's what you'll get.

  • Mandy, in general I try to spend gift money on something other than just sticking it in savings - my parents always just told me to do that since it's more interesting to get a thank you note that says "thank you so much for the birthday money, I got the boots I've been eyeing" than "thanks for the money, it's still just sitting there as money." However obviously if we'd needed it to cover something else, we wouldn't have spent it on something frivolous just to comply with that.
  • Thanks Ricks, you too :)  We're sig twins?  Make out twins?  Whatevs :)

That's great Tide, glad to hear it.  Can you believe you have TWO BABIES in your belly?  That's insane.  Very exciting.  I think if I were to get pregnant with twins, I'd be stoked.  One time deal.  Done.  Taryn's going to be pretty excited I bet.  Wait a sec though, are all 3 going to be in diapers at the same time?
