Quinoa

How do you like it?  I am trying to eat more of it.  I have had a really good chocolate quinoa cake.  No flour.  So good.  I want to make it one of these days. 

But as a side, does anyone have any tips, favourite ingredients?

  • I usually just steam it and add in mushrooms, diced peppers, and onions that I sauteed. That's all I got.

  • They were just talking about this on the radio today. I have not tried it yet.
  • I have never been crazy about it when I've had it, but I think it's just because it was in salads or pilafs with other flavors I didn't like.

    I want to try and make some myself, though.
  • I love it. It has a nice nutty flavor.

    I usually cook all grains (and sometimes couscous) with vegetable broth instead of water. It just adds a little more flavor.

  • I've got a box of it to try, but haven't done it yet. I'll probably sautee some carrots, maybe some onions and something else. Tomatoes, maybe, after it's cooked? Maybe some frozen peas?

  • In tabouleh as a replacement for bulgur wheat. I'm liking all these other suggestions, too.
  • One of my favorite mixtures to put into it is some finely diced (or processor minced) broccoli, a small dash of olive oil (or butter/margarine if you like) and some parmesan cheese. The saltiness of the parmesan with the nutty flavor of the quinoa go really well together. And the broccoli adds that 'fresh' taste to the whole thing.

    I usually use either chicken or a white fish as an accompanying protein.

  • i love using in in place of spaghetti. I cook it in the rice cooker and then mix in spaghetti sauce and parmesan cheese on top! delicious.
    I also found a great recipe online for a fried rice recipe made with quinoa. I cant remember exactly where though! 
  • I agree with a PP that mentioned to cook it with broth instead of water - adds some flavor.  I like to add grilled shrimp to mine too
  • what section of the grocery store is it in? do you have to go to specialty stores? i have wanted to try it but am always shy about asking at the store and havent been able to find it myself

  •  I like making quinoa with edamame and mandarins and then use a little bit of a soy ginger glaze.

     I also recently had quinoa with edamame, dried cranberries, chopped mango, sliced almonds and a little bit of red onion.  Yum.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions.  I'll be steering clear of it with lemon though.  I had some and it was made with lemon preserves and figs.  I did not like it.  At all.
