Is it just me or is this a jerk move?

A lady on my weight loss board just posted
"My husband told me that if I lost 1 dress size in 6 weeks he would buy me a ticket to visit my grandson in Hawaii. What are your quick fixes so that I can lose the weight and see my grandson?"

Personally I think this guy is a super jerk for dangling a visit with a grandkid with a huge weight loss goal. 1 dress size is normally about 10 pounds, and 10 pounds in 6 weeks is ridiculous. This lady is already 135 pounds at 5'5, so its not like she has a lot of weight to lose!

Re: Is it just me or is this a jerk move?

  • I agree it's a d!ck move. But here's the thing--joke's on him. Dress sizes are so jacked up anyway, I'm sure she could probably convince him she'd lost a ton of weight by buying a dress with a smaller number on it.
  • I agree JK - her weight seems fine as it is.  Who knows.  Maybe there are health issues there too, depending on how she carries it.  5'5" and 135 is solidly within normal BMI calculations, but so is 5'5" and 125.

  • That's what one of the posters said Opal. "Just go buy a dress a size bigger, another dress a size smaller and call it a day".
  • You're right Opal, sizing is so different from one store to another.  I wear a full two sizes smaller in Gap jeans than AE jeans, for example.  On the same day.  Without losing any weight.

  • My concern is, why does the husband have so much control over the finances that she can't buy her own ticket to California? I mean, I'm all for consulting the SO before spending a chunk of money, but this woman must truly "submit" to her husband if I'm understanding the story correctly.

    It just makes me sad...

Same with me and anything at Ann Taylor loft. The dress I wore to my RD was two sizes smaller than anything I've worn in my adult life!
  • Note to self:  find an Ann Taylor Loft and feel good about yourself.

Sounds like she's the idiot to me.

Edit:  what man tells a woman to "drop a dress size"?  They usually say, drop 10 pounds or something.

I bet it went like this:  If I lose a dress size, will you buy me a ticket to Hawaii?  Yay!

I don't get married often, but when I do, I do it in Las Vegas.

  • Hawaii, not California but the sentiment is still the same. It amazes me too that she's old enough to be a grandmother, so I'm assuming she's at least 40.

Plus, everyone on the board is like "omg that's so great that he's helping you lose weight".
  • I'd drop 10 lbs for a ticket to Hawaii.  Then I'd gain it all back while I was there ;)

  • Yeah - I was thinking Cali because that's where MIL's god-grandchild is.

I'm w/ JK.  10 lbs for a ticket to Hawaii.  Yeah.  No sweat.
