Poll: Dogs and Kids

Re: Poll: Dogs and Kids

  • I would never leave our dog alone with a child. She has been known to snap, when she was in the car and a little girl stuck her hand in the back window. Not a good idea with a Doberman. She didn't bite her just scared her.
But she's sensitive about her ears and she really doesn't know her own strength. She loves our cat, and he rules her but sometimes she plays with him likes he's another dog.

[QUOTE]I had Lola in the shopping cart one day at Bass Pro Shop.  Most of the time no one noticed she was in there, but if she popped her little head up, kids immediately stuck their hands in the cart.  It was a pain in the ass that parent's didn't teach these children to ask before petting a strange dog and that they immediately just stuck their little hands in her face. In about 4 hours at Bass Pro, and maybe 25 children, only ONE little boy said "Ma'm, can I may I please pet the little black dog?" <- that's exactly how he said it! It was the most adorable thing ever and I thanked his mother for teaching her son manners.  He even knew to put his hand out so she could sniff it first. I grew up with dogs and still knew that I couldn't just pet a stranger's dog.

Oh my god yes. It's worse than Chile than where I'm from in CA by FAR. Kids come racing up, parents in tow, and freak out Lola (popular name!). I always tell them they should ask before stuffing their hands in her face, and the parents 9 times out of 10 say "oh yes, listen to the nice señora, she's right." Really? Then why did you not tell your child that yourself instead of blindly trusting a stranger's dog wouldn't take his hand off? Drives me crazy.

Yay for Lolas.  After I got and named mine, I met two more people with Boston's named Lola.

Anyway, it just pisses me off that if your grubby kid scares my dog and she bites, I'm the one that has to pay for it.
  • i don't have a dog and wouldn't get one while i have a small child. and when i do have a kids, i plan to supervise any time my cats are in the room with them when they are young. i have an almost 20-pounder who could suffocate a kid. lol.
  • I couldn't give away any of my furbabies. Once I get the bfp Katie and I are going to work on some major training with one of my friends who is a pretty well known dog trainer. Katie is pretty tolerant of the training I'm already starting though (pulling the tail, poking at her constantly, pulling the ears, etc). I think for her it would be more curiosity with licking and pawing.

I think I would be more worried with the cat curling up with a baby and smothering it with her fur than I would Katie having issues. Either way both animals will be supervised anytime they are near kids. Demon (cat) is terrified of toddlers so she'll just be under the bed the rest of her life...(jk)

One of my coworkers was convinced by her evil mil that she HAD to get rid of her cat while pregnant or she would get all kinds of diseases and kill the baby. The cat was 10 years old but still a very healthy and sweet animal. She came into work crying one day because she had just dropped the cat off a shelter. She miscarried a few months later and when she went to get the cat back from the shelter she discovered it had been euthanized :(

did you friend NOT ask around and realize that there are thousands of pregnant women out there who have cats and everybody is a-ok? poor kitty :( i know that pregnant women shouldn't clean out litter boxes, but they make self-cleaning ones she could have tried if nobody else was willing to help her with that!

is this directed at me because of the other thread? i've also met sweet pit bulls. my point is that i don't think small children should be around them.
  • my dog is ALWAYS supervised and often leashed around children. while he would never intentionally harm anyone or bite, he is very loving and hyper, and LARGE (69 lb golden retriever), and he doesn't know his own strength. he can very easily unintentionally harm someone, even me. even I am careful when I'm playing/messing with him, trying to be aware of where his teeth and paws are.

and ditto that there are ABSOLUTELY sweet pit bulls out there. my sister had one and I loved her.

and also, I used to work in the ER. the breed that sends the most people to the ER for dog bites? dachshunds. yep. I've seen one rottweiler bite (baby was totally unsupervised, one of my worst cases) and zero pit bull bites.

Is it bad that if I actually believed this nonsense I would decide to remain child-free rather than giving up my furbabies? I could never give them up, especially just drop them off at a shelter!

I think this MIL had seen "Lady and the Tramp" and the terrible siamese a few too many times...

    HAHAHA!

And SarahSmile - Your post in the other thread caused me to be curious of other's opinions.

The only one that I think is WRONG, is when someone gives away the pet before the baby is even born.  That's just ridiculous, IMO.

I don't think it's wrong to not allow small children near pitbulls.

I don't think it's wrong to allow small children near pitbulls.

It's just two different ways of doing things.

Not directed at anyone (not sure what thread you are talking about), just mentioned it because certain breeds tend to get a bad rap, which I don't agree with.
