Re: Wedding cake

• 1 - How many weddings have you been to? 3 including my own.
2 - How many have had good cake? I was 12 at the first one so I don't remember, the second was a really small wedding/reception so it was probably just sheet cake and I don't remember. Ours was really good :)
3 - Of the bad ones, did the B&G tell you ahead of time how yummy the cake would be? no
4 - What's your favorite wedding cake flavor? I like either vanilla or vanilla with a touch of fruity flavor or almond flavor.
5 - Fondant or buttercream? buttercream
6 - Is/was/will your wedding cake live up to your expectations? it did. They weren't super high, though.
7 - Do you want cake now? Eh, not really, but it seems like you do :)
8 - If so, and you lived in Boston, where would you go to get it? Bonus points if it's Back Bay or points north, more or less along the orange line.

1 - How many weddings have you been to? About 8, maybe more.
2 - How many have had good cake? The really memorable cakes? I don't know. Not many.
3 - Of the bad ones, did the B&G tell you ahead of time how yummy the cake would be? Nope.
4 - What's your favorite wedding cake flavor? Chocolate or marble.
5 - Fondant or buttercream? Buttercream. I don't like fondant.
6 - Is/was/will your wedding cake live up to your expectations? Our wedding cake was two flavors. The chocolate cake was awesome, the white cake was pretty generic.
7 - Do you want cake now? Sure!
8 - If so, and you lived in Boston, where would you go to get it? Bonus points if it's Back Bay or points north, more or less along the orange line. :DWe got our wedding cake as a package deal from Montilio's in Quincy. OMG so good. I can't say enough good stuff about them. If you like chocolate, get the chocolate cake with truffle ganache filling. SO GOOD.

5 - Fondant or buttercream? Buttercream.
6 - Is/was/will your wedding cake live up to your expectations? It was the best. We had the key lime and a chocolate kahlua caramel, and people are still talking about it almost a year later.
7 - Do you want cake now? Yes, as a matter of fact, I do.
8 - If so, and you lived in Boston, where would you go to get it? Bonus points if it's Back Bay or points north, more or less along the orange line. :DIs baby squirrly/onion craving cake?

3 - Of the bad ones, did the B&G tell you ahead of time how yummy the cake would be? no.
4 - What's your favorite wedding cake flavor? ours. it was chocolate with peanut butter butter cream
5 - Fondant or buttercream? ours had both. buttercream in the middle and to make the fondant stick to the cake. i like the look of both. cake was the hardest decision i had to make for the wedding.
6 - Is/was/will your wedding cake live up to your expectations? oh yes. even a year later for our anniversary.

• 1 - How many weddings have you been to? 15-20? I have no idea.
2 - How many have had good cake? Really good cake - only one that I can remember, besides ours
3 - Of the bad ones, did the B&G tell you ahead of time how yummy the cake would be? The parents of the B&G did. It was terrible.
4 - What's your favorite wedding cake flavor? White
5 - Fondant or buttercream? Buttercream
6 - Is/was/will your wedding cake live up to your expectations? Beyond. We had a cake made for each table as the centerpieces, and they turned out beautiful. All the work was done by one person, and we received boatloads of compliments on how great it tasted. It was moist enough that we were still eating it a week later.
7 - Do you want cake now? Of course
8 - If so, and you lived in Boston, where would you go to get it? Bonus points if it's Back Bay or points north, more or less along the orange line. :D
• 1 - How many weddings have you been to? A little over 15. I've lost track. My MOH has 7 next year alone to attend.
2 - How many have had good cake? None had bad. Maybe one or two had really good.
3 - Of the bad ones, did the B&G tell you ahead of time how yummy the cake would be? Nope
4 - What's your favorite wedding cake flavor? Red velvet
5 - Fondant or buttercream? buttercream all the way
6 - Is/was/will your wedding cake live up to your expectations? Probably because I have low expectations :)
7 - Do you want cake now? YES
8 - If so, and you lived in Boston, where would you go to get it? Bonus points if it's Back Bay or points north, more or less along the orange line. :D

4 - What's your favorite wedding cake flavor? I don't like wedding cake, but I like regular vanilla cake
5 - Fondant or buttercream? none
6 - Is/was/will your wedding cake live up to your expectations? Cupcakes
7 - Do you want cake now? Yes.. thanks a lot Yell

• 1 - How many weddings have you been to? 7
2 - How many have had good cake? 6
3 - Of the bad ones, did the B&G tell you ahead of time how yummy the cake would be? Not exactly, but her friend works in a bakery and offered to make it for her for free and she refused. She probably should have let her friend who makes delicious cakes make it. It was gross.
4 - What's your favorite wedding cake flavor? Red velvet is my favorite cake; I'm sure I would really like it at a wedding.
5 - Fondant or buttercream? buttercream
6 - Is/was/will your wedding cake live up to your expectations? We're having 4 different flavors of cheesecake and then plain white and chocolate wedding cake. It should be delicious.
7 - Do you want cake now? Yes please!

• 1 - How many weddings have you been to?
4 I can remember... but probably more, maybe?

2 - How many have had good cake?
I don't remember most of the cakes they had.

3 - Of the bad ones, did the B&G tell you ahead of time how yummy the cake would be?
Only 1 did. She kept saying how their cake was made out of so many flavors and the guests were going to be offered their choice.... And of course that didn't happen. Everyone got a slice of cake plopped down in front of them. And everyone I talked to had the same filling.

4 - What's your favorite wedding cake flavor?
canole (sp?)

5 - Fondant or buttercream?
I've never had either on a wedding cake before. I have tasted more wedding cakes than weddings I've been invited to and the cake cutters always 86 that stuff before serving it.

6 - Is/was/will your wedding cake live up to your expectations?
I have low expectations, so I'm not bothered if it will live up to it.

7 - Do you want cake now?
Yes. :(

8 - If so, and you lived in Boston, where would you go to get it? Bonus points if it's Back Bay or points north, more or less along the orange line. :D
I don't live in Boston, but will I get bonus points if I say Back Bay, anyway?

• 1 - How many weddings have you been to? Hmmm, a lot? I can think of 13 for sure. 14 if mime counts.

2 - How many have had good cake? Most of them

3 - Of the bad ones, did the B&G tell you ahead of time how yummy the cake would be? One for sure came from a big bakery in the area so everyone loved that it was from there. But I hate their cakes because they use almond flavoring in their frosting. It was an amazing looking cake though, in the shape of presents since it was Christmas time.

4 - What's your favorite wedding cake flavor? Funfetti, which was mine.

5 - Fondant or buttercream? Buttercream totally.

6 - Is/was/will your wedding cake live up to your expectations? Yep it was amazing. Funfetti with white chocolate mocha filling and buttercream frosting. My aunt made it and she makes amazing cakes so I had no doubt in my mind.

7 - Do you want cake now? Yes, and I hate you for asking because now I want it more, and I have a box of funfetti and rainbow chip frosting in my pantry. You know we are in a diet competition!

8 - If so, and you lived in Boston, where would you go to get it? N/A

• 1 - How many weddings have you been to? 20? 25? Apparently that's a lot around here today. Where's Fishy?
2 - How many have had good cake? About half.
3 - Of the bad ones, did the B&G tell you ahead of time how yummy the cake would be? Almost always! And then they drape it in fondant and ruin what might have been good cake.
4 - What's your favorite wedding cake flavor? Vanilla, white chocolate, Anything light like that, preferably with a fruity filling (raspberry's my favorite).
5 - Fondant or buttercream? BUTTERCREAM! Fondant is gross.
6 - Is/was/will your wedding cake live up to your expectations? Yup, it was awesome. Which is why I paid twice what I had originally budgeted.
7 - Do you want cake now? Yeah, kind of a lot.
8 - If so, and you lived in Boston, where would you go to get it? Bonus points if it's Back Bay or points north, more or less along the orange line. :D Aside from the grocery, I'm clueless on stuff like this still. I work in a trendy area, but there aren't any cute bakeries here that I can find. Somebody should rectify that.

1. Eh, 4 lately
2. One, besides my own
3. No
4. I pretty much just love cake. The best I have ever had though was some kind of angel food with peaches inside, and a really creamy frosting
5. Buttercream
6. Yep
7. Yes
8. Does it have to be wedding cake? My favorite cupcakes are from Kickass Cupcakes in Davis. Aside from that, I'm a big fan of Lyndell's bakery in Somerville. It's near Sound Bites, I think. That place you and I first met.

Edit: and if you want to stay on the orange line, check out Modern Pastry in the North End.
• 1 - How many weddings have you been to? 4, maybe 5, not including my own
2 - How many have had good cake? I honestly don't remember. 2 were when I was little, the others I just can't recall.
3 - Of the bad ones, did the B&G tell you ahead of time how yummy the cake would be? No. The last one they talked more about the pig they were roasting, which was delicious. I think their cake was coconut, which I don't like so I didn't have any.
4 - What's your favorite wedding cake flavor? I really like red velvet, French vanilla, and plain chocolate
5 - Fondant or buttercream? Buttercream, definitely
6 - Is/was/will your wedding cake live up to your expectations? I loved our cake, it was marble with buttercream frosting. I was more exciting by the appearance though, since I'm not a big cake person.
7 - Do you want cake now? Not really

• 1 - How many weddings have you been to? 8 or 9

2 - How many have had good cake? Most of them. Some I was young, so I don't remember.

3 - Of the bad ones, did the B&G tell you ahead of time how yummy the cake would be? Yes this happened, actually in July. Yuck. The bride even came over after we ate the cake and was all- it was so yummy wasn't it?! - No, just no.

4 - What's your favorite wedding cake flavor? I like basic yellow best. But I also love chocolate, marble, pineapple.

5 - Fondant or buttercream? The GOOD fondant. Marshmallow-y. YUM.

6 - Is/was/will your wedding cake live up to your expectations? Ours was good. We actually enjoyed the cakes more when we went to our tasting. Our actual wedding cake wasn't as..erm..moist. (ick)

7 - Do you want cake now? You're making me want some.

8 - If so, and you lived in Boston, where would you go to get it? Bonus points if it's Back Bay or points north, more or less along the orange line. :D

• 1 - How many weddings have you been to? Quite a few - half Greek, remember?

2 - How many have had good cake? In a totally unbiased way (because it was the ONE thing I knew exactly what I wanted based on well... schooling...) only ours. I tend to hate wedding cakes.

3 - Of the bad ones, did the B&G tell you ahead of time how yummy the cake would be? Of course... some of them were nearly inedible after being told it's "zomg the best strawberry shortcake you ever did eat!"

4 - What's your favorite wedding cake flavor? Ours ;) Dark chocolate sponge cake, white chocolate, dulce de leche, milk chocolate buttercreams and white chocolate fondant.

5 - Fondant or buttercream? Fondant but ONLY if it's done right. It can go so wrong if your cake person doesn't know what they're doing.

6 - Is/was/will your wedding cake live up to your expectations? Our was awesome. Pity I only had like three bites ;)

7 - Do you want cake now? I could go for some, yes...

• 1 - How many weddings have you been to? No idea, maybe 10?

2 - How many have had good cake? Not sure, only remember the bad cake.
3 - Of the bad ones, did the B&G tell you ahead of time how yummy the cake would be? No.
4 - What's your favorite wedding cake flavor? From our wedding, strawberry grand marnier! Yum! And I love that it had real fruit in it.
5 - Fondant or buttercream? Definitely buttercream. Fondant is disgusting.
6 - Is/was/will your wedding cake live up to your expectations? Our cake was really good! I kind of felt like it tasted better at the tasting than the actual cake, but it was really good.
7 - Do you want cake now? Yes please.
8 - If so, and you lived in Boston, where would you go to get it? Our cake was from Konditor Meister and they are awesome. We tasted Montillio’s and Icing on the Cake and they did not compare. The other palce I love to get cakes from is Athan’s in Brookeline. Their Bolero cake is to DIE for!!

PS. Side note: it always bothers me when people put the look of the cake ahead of the taste. Afterall, why pay that much money for a prop in a picture that no one will eat?

• 1 - How many weddings have you been to? I can count 10 off the top of my head (excluding my first marriage), 11 including mine.
2 - How many have had good cake? I honestly couldn't tell you - they've kind of run together and a lot of the weddings were when I was younger. Except for mine. A year later, and I'm still craving mine.
3 - Of the bad ones, did the B&G tell you ahead of time how yummy the cake would be? N/A
4 - What's your favorite wedding cake flavor? Probably chocolate or some fruit spread with chocolate or white.
5 - Fondant or buttercream? BUTTERCREAM!
6 - Is/was/will your wedding cake live up to your expectations? It surpassed it. For a small, simple cake, it was divine, and I'm glad we also ordered a small sheet cake to munch on.

• Yeah, Modern has cake. Not a ton of selection, since they're known for other stuff, but they definitely have a display case. I think I've seen carrot, chocolate, Italian cream, and a few others next to all the tiramisu and fruit tarts.
• 1 - How many weddings have you been to? 11 that I can think of
2 - How many have had good cake? Our cake was the best. Sorry, it just was. But I only remember two bad ones, so the other 8 were probably all shades of good.
3 - Of the bad ones, did the B&G tell you ahead of time how yummy the cake would be? Yes. Both times.
4 - What's your favorite wedding cake flavor? Chocolate
5 - Fondant or buttercream? Buttercream
6 - Is/was/will your wedding cake live up to your expectations? Hells yes. Please see answer to number 1.
7 - Do you want cake now? Yes, damn you. I usually want cake though, so this is nothing new.
8 - If so, and you lived in Boston, where would you go to get it? Bonus points if it's Back Bay or points north, more or less along the orange line. :D
• I have a few conclusions:

We should all have cake!

Really, I should go get lunch. And then get cake on my way home from work.

Cake flavors are such a personal thing, I think it's hard for a B&G to please the majority of their guests. Which is why they LURVE their cake and the guests are kinda "meh" about it.

Moral of that story? More cake?

• I think I've come to the conclusion that a lot of you haven't had a properly made fondant before. This saddens me.

• my SIL had a konditor meister cake whihc apparently is "top notch" around here, adn the fondant was like paste. her cake was well over $800, not sure how they could not properly make fondant for that outrageous amount of money.

[QUOTE]Fated, you've had cake with no icing at all? WEIRD.

lol, I'll explain further, I probably should have in my first post...

If the cake has fondant on it, the cake cutter usually peels away the fondant and what's left is a very thin layer of buttercream or icing that had been used to stick the fondant to the cake.
If the cake had buttercream on it, then the thick layer is scraped away and only a very thin layer is left.
So every time I've had wedding cake, there is a very thin layer of buttercream left, but never enough to leave a lasting impression on me. It could taste good or bad, I never noticed, really. And I've never had fondant before. So I can't really make a fair assessment.
