What's funny is that when things fell apart a few weeks ago, one of my coworkers said that at least now I could stop planning on moving out of state with H and concentrate on making this my "permanent" job.  Um.  No.  This was supposed to be a job to get me through college.  I'm almost done.  The plan to leave is still in effect.  And I still might move out of state, depending on where I can get a job.

  • All the secretarial people I've ever worked with were awesome so yeah I don't get the hate or the need to make the title seem more important.  Most people who work with them know they are pretty fuuuuucking important. I don't know how many "u's" to use.

[QUOTE]As far as the receptionist/secretary/admin assistant stuff is concerned, I see differences between them. Receptionist:  Mostly greeting people in the office, answering phones, etc. Secretary:  "a step up" from a receptionist and does more clerical work in addition to the other duties. Administrative Assistant:  Deals more with the interworkings of office stuff and has higher level responsibility/job functions than the other two? Does that make sense?  And for the record, I truly believe that these positions keep an office running and that they are some of the most important people in an office.

<div>I did ALL  of those things, though, when I was a secretary so in my experience, the differentiation is pointless. I answered all incoming calls, was the dedicated assistant to the family lawyer, and did whatever else any of the other lawyers asked me to.</div>

  • Holly - I had to BEG for business cards - and I DO talk to vendors and clients and pimp my company out all the time. And our cards are full color/design on both sides, so there was no way for me to write my name. I was handing out my boss's cards for over a year. DUMB.

I agree that you can't take it at face value but that's the breakdown in my head if people are arguing that they aren't "a secretary but an administrative assistant."

My title is more of a department, but I'm the only one so it goes. I really like that I work with all of our customers, but they are all over the world so I don't need business cards. I've only met a few of our customers in person. I get all flustered in person.

[QUOTE]The thing with the Director of First Impressions title for our office is that there is this Business Practice Management company for financial advisors named PEAK. They have a lot of offices all over the country who pay them to help get their stuff in order. That's one of their job titles. The marketing person is, no lie, called the <strong>Director of Love Affair Marketing.</strong> They set appointments and send out letters; it's not a freaking love affair.  I got my boss to change the titles. And by "got my boss to change them" I mean took them off all our documents and he never noticed.

And I love that you changed them without him noticing.

This is me too. I can chat people up in person, via IM or email, but I am awful on the phone. I just lost my work phone too. The older people here hate that all the young people opt to use IM or email for communication purposes.

    Thanks Froggie.

    Engineer -- /> Unpasteurized Milk
Senior Engineer -- /> Pasteurized Milk
    Staff Engineer -- /> Cream
Senior Staff Engineer -- /> Butter
Senior Project Manager -- /> Cheese

<div>It kills me when I see a girl running and the boobs are flying up and down to the point where they are close to smacking her in the face.  They do make special equipment to wrangle those babies.  I have DDs, and have been able to find extra supportive ones that cause little to no movement.  Sure, they are a bit more expensive than those ones that you get at Target or something, but doesn't that hurt when they flap?  Jeesh.</div>
