Wow...Tragic Story Out of My HS

So, I was watching CNN today and heard a report about a boy from my hometown committing suicide due to bullying because of his sexuality.

It's such a tragic story, and the town is reeling. Thankfully, the public is responding with outrage, and according to my family, the town is expecting 6,000 people (from all over the nation) to attend a candlelight vigil tonight in his honor.

Thoughts/prayers for his family and my town would be appreciated during this tragic time.

Here's just one article about him: http://www.advocate.com/News/Daily_News/2010/09/14/Bullying_Drives_Student_to_Suicide/

  • That is so sad.  I am so glad I am not a kid now days.  It seems so much harder than when I was a kid.

  • I agree. I'm just heartbroken for his family and friends.

  • I can't even imagine.  We have a town right around where I live that has a HUGE problem with teen suicide.  They actually formed a committee of sorts to try and figure out what the problem is.  They were just about to 'celebrate' one year without a teen suicide, and a high school kid walked in front of a train.
I had an uncle commit suicide, and I remember that being dificult.  But a 15 year old?  Due to bullying?  Unimaginable.

  • Oh my...that's horrible. Yeah, I just can't fathom how bad the bullying must have been for him to feel like he had no way out and no other option.

  • T&P to the boy's family. It is incredibly sad when these kids have no where else to turn and someone can't see it happening. I am not blaming the adults, but sometimes I think we turn our head when we see things like this happening.

As someone in the education field, bullying is a serious problem in a lot of school districts. Teachers attend workshops and seminars about it all of the time. Hell, I even have a boy in my class this year that I think is going to be a bully bc he already is. He is just a mean kid.
  • Thanks, ladies.
