Polygamy

Re: Polygamy

  • I have no problem with it but it does create logistical nightmares.  Should husband's insurance HAVE to cover all the wives and all the children?  What if he can't afford that?  Do the 2nd on down wives get Medicaid?  Do they qualify?  Who is considered to be dependents on a tax return?  All of them?  Who signs a DNR?  Are the wives related?  Do they have any say over their "step children?  What rights do they have in relation to each other?  What happens in divorce?  Does the wife get "half" or does she get a fourth or 1/6 (if half is still his and the remaining half is divided among 3).  Can one of the remaining wives fight the other wife in the divorce proceeding?

As long as my tax dollars don't have to pay to get your logistics sorted out, I am fine with it.  I don't see any difference between gay or straight marriage logistics so that is not an argument to me.

I don't get married often, but when I do, I do it in Las Vegas.

  • When I saw this subject heading I thought it was going to be about inviting a polygamous couple/family to your wedding... which is an interesting question in itself.  Do you invite the man and his "legal" wife or do you invite them all?  Presumably you'd invite them all, it just makes for a lot of names on one invitation!
  • And I'm sure we've all wondered how come men can take on multiple wives, but women can not.

    well, this is simple enough.

men can have multiple wives who are all pregnant at the same time.  allowing men multiple wives i beleive started back when they needed to build their armies in defense of their faith.  a man with multiple wives can produce 4, 5 or 6+ babies all at the same time by simultaneously impregnating them.   a woman can only have a baby once every 9 months at minimum.  it would take her YEARS to have 6 babies from 6 different men.

im pretty sure Mormons stopped this practice (except for the fundamentalist sects) once freedom of relgion was established and there was no fear of having to build an army/defend the faith/family/compound.
  • I wouldn't really care one way or the other as it doesn't effect me - FI knows that one woman's opinion is enough. I am actually addicted to Sister Wives on TLC. I can't comprehend how they are so ok with the whole thing; I would be crazy jealous. If people are ok with having multiple wives that's great, but I think if you make that legal then bigamy (1 woman with multiple husbands) should also be legal just to make it fair. I don't know who in their right mind would want to do it, but if that's your thing then go for it. I don't see how this relates to gay/same-sex marriage, but I definitely support same sex marriage; my "Man of Honor" should be able to have his wedding just like any other happily engaged person.
