Are these people serious? (Baby name related.)

I got in "trouble" for linking a thread yesterday (on my club board), but I'm doing it again! Can't say I really care if people on the bump don't like me, though.

http://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/29387977/ShowThread.aspx#29387977

This also brings me to a pet peeve of mine: Michaela spelled anyway BUT Michael with an "a" is not acceptable! Someone posted on the bump baby name boards about spelling it Michaela and a TON of people said, "I think people will have trouble pronouncing it" or "I really prefer the spelling Makayla." AHHH!

Edit: CN - This woman has a son named Markhas Aiden and wants to name her twins Braylon Deion and Mackayla Grace.

Edit2: Based on one of her (many) tickers, I think Markhas might be a junior!

  • Did she make up that name? what the heck? Does she know how to spell?

I'd post that on the bump but I don't want to sign up.

  • You can post there with your knot ID. I do. Everything's the same except your post count, I think. However, I wouldn't advise you do it! I stick to the names board and still find BSC people. Obviously.

  • When I read it, I keep emphasizing the "h"

I know its "Marcus" but I read "Mark-has"

I hate these stupid spellings, it really ticks me off..Meet my girl "Youneeck". I am so glad all my nieces have normal names, "Natalie, Samantha, Elizabeth and Lily." So normal, no questions about pronunciation.

Ok, maybe I'm on crack, but aren't Makayla and Michaela two different names? Like the first has 3 syllables and the second has 4?

Either way, her kids are going to get picked on. WTF is Markhas? I would pronounce it Mark-has as in Mark has a crappy mom.

Yeah, I read it Mark has first, too. that's why I was like Mark has a weird name.

  • God, I hope that kid goes by Mark.

And I've always pronounced them the same, Leah. I was a big Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman fan at age 11 and Jane Seymour's character spelled her name Michaela (and was named after her father).

  • They could have a slight difference.

Makayla more of a short a/u sound
    Michaela/Micheala more of a short i sound

  • Hmm, maybe I'm thinking of something else. I used to know a Russian chick named Mick Eye El A. (Don't laugh at my phonetics.) How do you spell that? I have no idea how that chick spelled her name.
  • Is your name Leah? My MOH just named her baby Leah, and she's the coolest baby in the world, I got her a Star Wars onsie and she can rock it like no baby's business!

  • My neice is named Makayla, and I've seen Mikayla, as well as Michaela. Michaela was actually the first spelling, I think, because it is the female version of Michael.

Markhas is just plain weird. Why add an H if its silent anyway. I have seen Marcus and Markus..

  • It's probably spelled the same just pronounced with the extra syllable of the "ella" at the end

I knew a girl named Erin in high school who legally changed her name to Airn. There was also a Jane who became a Jayne. So it's not just parents, apparently people do this to themselves.

Edit: I just checked facebook and apparently both of these people have gone back to Erin and Jane, so maybe it wasn't a legal change. I just remember them writing that all over everything and eventually spelling it like that on fb when it came around to Missouri.

  • In my college newsletter I saw a woman named Krystl who named her baby Madylin. So I guess people with youneek spellings aren't always ashamed of them.

  • I will never understand people's obsession with Nevaeh (heaven backwards). It just screams badness to me.
  • I really don't understand why people go out of their way to look more stupid and illiterate than they probably are.

If you want an uncommon name for your child, pick an uncommon name. Don't take a popular name and fvck up the spelling. Then you have a name with BOTH the problems of being common (having 2 other kids in the same class with the same name), AND being unusual (having it misspelled constantly). Plus you look like some kind of idiot who was at the hospital saying, "ummmmm how do you spell it again?" and sounding it out in badly done phonetics when you did the paperwork.
  • Now, the Jayne with the y I kind of like. It's distinguished and actually because of the y, automatically I think Jane Eyre.

That I agree with completely. And B, I kind of agree about the Jayne, and at least you can tell at first glance what it's supposed to be. Airn though, she was an airhead anyway and I didn't particularly like her, so I guess it fits.

  • I love Jane Eyre :)

  • I knew a girl named Jayne. It's not terrible, but maybe that's because I was used to seeing that spelling from the time I was young.

There are seriously a ridiculous amount of uncommon names you can use. Changing the spelling of a top 50 name is dumb.

I half-jokingly suggested St. John as a name the other day (it's pronounced sort of like "sinjin," depending on your accent - it's very old fashioned British. There's actually a character with the name in Jane Eyre and it's a running joke in Four Weddings and a Funeral). Anyway, it was not well recieved. But seriously, if you come up with names like Macen... well, St. John is actually a REAL name. Aside from the weird spelling/pronunciation I still think it could fly. No one else in your son's class would have that name!

And people complain it's soooo hard to come up with names for boys.

Michaela was a girl name that I wanted long before it became popular (will not use it now). I always thought that "MIchael with an a" was the proper spelling and every one else was weird. Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, her first name was Michaela and that is how it was spelled.

edit: I see this was already discussed. that's what I get for not reading through first.
