Deadliest Catch *spoilers*

Anyone else watching? Captain Phil just had a stroke and I'm in shock they are showing so much of it on tv. I wish it could have ended differently for him and his family :(

Did he die? I saw the previews but don't watch the show!

  • Yes, he died.  Not in this episode though.  So sad.

  • He did. He had a stroke during off loading and died in the hospital.
  • His older son seems so together. I cried :(

  • I saw it. I was surprised they showed so much too... they must have gotten permission from the family. They didn't actually say he died in this episode... I guess that's in the next one? It was terrible... I feel awful for watching.
  • They released it before the season aired, so the entire season has had a shadow over it. Especially when he's fighting with his kids. You just want to be like "omg stop yelling and just hug each other".

I turned to Dh and said "See, that's why you need to stop smoking!"

I can't tell you how many times during this season, I have turned to FI and said, "If they only knew...."

    I'm still teared up. :(
  • Yeah...that was a rough episode.  Especially right before when he was showing his sons all of their baby pictures.  The next three episodes will show his decline and eventual death.  Here's an article I found that explains Phil gave permission for them to tape and document his last days.

  • Awww that's sad.

  • Geez...I'm glad you found that article, it's good to know that Phil still wanted this.
His saying they have to show the end made me tear up again. Talk about one strong guy.
  • It's not on for another hour and a half. Crap, I'm gonna cry. Phil is my fave.

  • I met his two sons and Captain Jonathan Hillstrand a few years back at an event. Capt. Phil's sons are the two sweetest, most smilingest, most happy guys ever. I have a video this ancient video card, and I was talking to them and jokingly said, "Ok, now can you say how awesome I am?" and immediately, both of them go, "You're SO awesome!"

Ok, kind of lame, but seriously - two great, great guys. I felt so heartbroken for them about their dad.

  • That's a good story, TJ!

I'm about to send you a PM, too (unrelated).

I missed the show, forgot even after my SIL told me about it earlier today. But as an RN that works with dying patients everyday in Hospice home care, I'm glad they are showing this. Its the hard part of reality.  He actually died months ago, I remember following it online and on the Discover website.

I've seen families deal with this on both sides of the medical field. I used to be a critical care RN in a hospital for 12 years before I left to work for hospice in 2006. This type of illness happens more often that people think.  Familes are left torn, scared and speechless when life is turned upside down.

Hug you r loved ones and tell them you care, life is very precious and we are not guaranteed the next minute.

  • Yeah, I love this show, and I will admit that I cried. That article still almost made me tear up again. But was a hard episode to watch, especially since I knew he was gone long before the season started.

It was also a hard episode for me to watch because of personal experience with a stroke victim. All I have to say, is I have a new respect for Josh at how calm he was able to remain in the situation.

  • Yeah, Josh really held it together and did what needed to be done.

This episode scared the crap out of me as Dh is a heavy smoker. He goes "It wasn't just the smoking, it was the Red Bull and working long hours"

Um, hon, not making me feel better when you drink Mountain Dew like water and work 14 hour days with 2 hour commutes...and has to wake up in 3 hours for work and is still playing video games.
  • The entire episode was so sad because you knew what was going to happen, and like someone else said you wanted to yell at them to just stop fighting and hug already. I also felt so bad for Jake, because you know he had to be thinking about admitting to his dad about his addiction and going to rehab and probably felt some blame on the entire thing.

I also wanted to add that I think what Keith did was slimy, calling his daughter to talk him out of chewing that stuff. A little girl should not be his fallback system, that's a lot of pressure for a child, to feel like she has to be the one to save her father from dying of cancer.
  • I know I'm stepping in on this convo way late. Phil was from around here and I know his sons. I ran into Josh at a local bar he frequents a few weeks after Phil passed away. Josh and I have hung out, a lot more in the past, and have a lot of mutual friends, his nickname for me is "Kid". (So, I wasn't just some creepy fan prying FYI.) I asked him how everything was going. He said he is doing alright and was still contemplating doing another season of Deadliest Catch. (I haven't seen him much since so I'm not sure he signed for another season after this.) It was so sad though. I have never lost a close family member so I can't relate, but he said it was really weird, he would forget and pick up his phone about to call his dad then realize he can't. Josh told me that Jake is taking it a little bit harder. I told him my prays are with them and to call if he needs anything. But I just wanted to reassure everyone they seem to be doing alright.
