Recommend your bridal under-the-dress corset/bustier!

You'd think I was planning a wedding with all these WR questions I've had the last couple days.

Corset/Bustier? I want something to hold me in (I am full-chested), but also to be comfortable. Additionally, I'm trying to find something that won't pop out over the back of my gown, which comes down to a bit below my shoulder blades.

Where did you get yours? Was it comfy all day/night? If you would recommend it, let me know! There aren't many lingerie stores where I live.

I don't think sewing in cups would be good for me, considering my too-big chest. And I want to make sure I'm held in nicely, considering the fitted style of the gown. Eek! Thanks!

  • I just bought the long-line bra I was fitted with at David's Bridal. I also tried one on at Victoria's Secret, one of the Body by Victoria ones. I decided to go with the D&B because it seemed more versatile.

  • I would see what the seamstress can do with cups.  A good one should be able to hold you in there with no problem.  With the cut of your dress I would be worried about the bra showing everytime you moved.

That's what I was worried about. If they sew cups in, are they padded? I don't want any extra volume there. <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-wink.gif" border="0" alt="Wink" title="Wink" />

  • Cups don't have to have the extra padding, that's all I used in my dress. A longline bra was unconformtable and a corset, the boning showed through my dress. Of course, my dress was a bit snug, so that may have been why.

I just ended up with spanx to smooth my stomach and cups sewn in my dress for the girls.

  • The cups don't have to be padded, but they need to have enough "umpf" to keep everything from drooping.  Mine were padded a bit so we could fill out the boning of the dress and cut down on alterations.

    Ok, this makes sense.

  • I second the cups suggestion. I need a good bit of support, and nearly every formal dress I've ever worn I've gone the cup route and been really comfortable. The longline bras always seemed to add bulk to me rather than pull me in, plus, I always feel the need to pull at those types of undergarments all day.
  • Lyndsey, I felt the same way! My dress actually fit better without the longline bra.

Did you wear anything else under the dress, besides panties then? Was it just cups? Or did you have a bustier or spanx too? I'm just trying to examine all of my options. But I don't want to be uncomfortable! <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-smile.gif" border="0" alt="Smile" title="Smile" />

Yeah, I think this will probably be true for me too. I'm just nervous about not having spanx or anything. That is one fitted gown for sure. Ha!

  • Shannon, I can't tell from the picture, but if you dress has any built in boning, you are not going to want a long line bra.  They usually have boning themselves.

It doesn't have any boning in it. But if it did, that would be double torture. <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-yell.gif" border="0" alt="Yell" title="Yell" />

  • Exactly, whit, I think you actually gain thickness when you put it on!

Shannon, I used just cups. I thought about doing spanx, but I decided that with my type of dress I didn't really need it. I'm not sure what your experience is with spanx, but I feel like I always get a "midsection muffin-top" when I wear them, so for tight fitting dresses I often go without. It's most likely my body-type (I've got a bit of a tummy), but I'd give it a test-try on if you're contemplating spanx.

For what it's worth, I'm so glad I didn't wear any crazy undergarments - it was a long day, and I was so much more comfortable!
  • I had padded cups put into my dress to help the little one's and I also am wearing a lower body spanx type product that covers my hips and stomach.

Originally I buy a girdle/shapewear type thing that ended up adding bulk to the dress.
  • I got one from Macy's.  I've only used with other dresses so far (haven't tried it on with my wedding dress), but it works fine.
