I need some creative advice.

The lead singer from our band is a family friend, weddings are not their gig at all, and he did my mom a huge favor by playing at mine. When he wasn't playing he was taking photos and video (we didn't pay him for this, he did it on his own), I just got the video he put together last night. We didn't have a videographer so I was really excited about this.

But, unfortunately, it's bad. Really bad. My name is misspelled and it's uber uber cheesy.

I'm not going to tell him this, I'm going to tell him how wonderful he is for putting it together for us, we love it, and yadda yadda. But, I really want the original footage and photos. How do I ask for them? I want to come up with a reason though, not just "I'd love to have the original footage", I really don't want to hurt his feelings.

Ideas?

Re: I need some creative advice.

  • I'd just say you want to see the raw stuff b/c you don't remember a lot of what happened at the wedding and it would be awesome to see some footage to jog your memory.
  • Can you ask for the orriginal footage to see everytthing that was edited so you can really capture all those magical moments:)? You want to create something with it for a present for your parents?
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • I would just ask if you could have a copy of the raw footage, too.
  • You could say, "We love the wedding video!  By the way, we were just wondering if we could get a copy of the raw footage.  My mom and dad really want to see the whole thing so they can remember every last detail.  You know how sentimental they are."

When I have to ask for something and it's kind of awkward, I just say I'm asking because so-and-so wanted me to.  Of course, I guess this would only work if your mom and dad are actually sentimental.

This. Then it won't read as "You did horrible and I want to fix it!"

  • You can say you want to put together a video scrapbook for your parents including old home movies, wedding footage, and soon-to-be-baby footage - so you wanted the raw wedding footage to start working on it.

Unless he offers to do it for you as another gift - then I guess you could oh so nicely decline and say you want a project to work on during mat leave.

Project during maternity leave...  HA!  My project is keeping up with the house (at which I am failing miserably)
Holy Crap. We survived the first year!

  • Oh wow, he should definitely stick to his day job.
  • Oh, Laine, Embarassed

I hope he gets you the raw footage. Good luck!

  • No offense, but blech. I would just ask for the raw footage and because I can be a bitch, I'd tell him he spelled my name wrong. I'm always reminding people that I'm Janis with an S and not "ice". It drives me crazy.

My dad is doing my video. He used to do cheese like what this was, but that was years ago. The video that someone posted a while back -- was shot on Super 8 -- that's the look/feel I want for mine.

  • As PPs mentioned, just ask for the original footage, using the excuse of wanting to see it all. :)

And I must say...that is pretty bad.

I love that it says w/love not with love.

This is why I believe that people should be required to take lessons in "not making stuff ugly/lame/cheesy" in programs like Windows Movie Maker, iMovie, Photoshop, etc.
