Need your help for a segment.

Hi Knotties,

I’ll post this on a couple of boards, but we’re doing a story on how far you’ll go to get gorgeous for your wedding. Brides like Jessica Simpson are going vegan and of course there is Bridalplasty. The Knot wants to know how much you actually care about how good you  look for your wedding? Are you willing to fix a crooked nose with surgery for the big day? How about do a cleanse to look extra-good in your dress? Tell me what you’re doing to get bridal beautiful!

Thanks,

KA

  • I'm going to whiten my teeth (with the kits you can buy at the store). That's about it.

  • I got my eyebrows (among, ahem, other places) waxed, manicure, pedicure. I tried to diet for a bit beforehand. I worked out, especially trying to tone areas like my arms, since I had a strapless dress. I didn't really do anything crazy, because I wanted to actually still look like ME on my wedding day.

I would not get plastic surgery just for my wedding. If I was planning to do so anyway, I might try to do it before the wedding, but not just because of a wedding. Although I wouldn't ever get facial plastic surgery anyway.
  • I had plastic surgery on my face to correct lesions from a car accident in 2005.  The surgery didn't correct all the scarring, so I did panic initially about my face on the day of the wedding.  I spent the months up to the big day moisturizing the affected area religiously.  The day of the wedding, the artist applied the makeup in such a way that it wasn't visible.  I didn't get the surgery for my wedding (it was done before I met H) but if my face had been in the same shape it was before the surgery, I would have had it done before the wedding.  But nothing else.  I like my nose as-is, and I've learned to live with my chin.

  • I amped up my workout routine and really watched what I ate. I lost about 15lbs before the wedding. I'm also loathe to admit that I did tan a couple times. I would never do it again, except spray tanning, because I know now that it's just not worth the risk.

I don't understand wanting to look like a different person on your wedding day by having plastic surgery. Your FI chose to marry you because he loves who you are, flaws and all. I wanted my DH to know it was me coming down the aisle, just a healthier more toned me.

  • I got full crowns on all 4 of my front teeth.  It was a partly cosmetic, partly structural decision as my teeth are very soft and I have an odd bite pattern, on top of them being a little misshapen and chipped.  I also got whitening done in my dentist's office.  It cost about 3k for everything even after reimbursement but it was worth it as I've always hated my smile, and I knew I'd be smiling a lot on my wedding day.

If I wanted to hear the pitter-patter of little feet, I'd put shoes on the cat. image

  • I have some major ethical issues about having plastic surgery to "look good" for the wedding, and I think that shows like Bridalplasty disgusting. The media does enough damage to the female psyche with anorexic models and actresses with flawless complexions,  now we need to tell girls that their wedding will not be perfect if they don't get a nose job? Sick.

I do want to look my best for the wedding day, but I am not doing anything drastic. FI and I are both working out at the gym and dieting, but that is because we want to start a healthier lifestyle, and that will continue after the wedding. I will also probably use one of those at-home teeth whitening products, and I am having a facial a couple days before.

  • I am trying to lose weight, but not necessarily for the wedding. I already purchased my dress and it fits now and will still fit if I lose 10 lbs or so (it isn't a fitted dress so I have some wiggle room.) And I did have a mole removed on my shoulder. This wasn't exactly for the wedding either, I've been meaning to do it for a while but the idea of wedding pictures gave me the extra push to schedule the appointment.

Other than that, I'm not doing much. I'm even planning on doing my hair, makeup, and nails myself. And since my wedding is at the end of August I will have to be a little more careful about tan lines and what bathing suits I wear all summer.
  • I would never do anything as extreme as surgery or anything that could affect my health. I'm eating right, and working out more. I'm also going to whiten my teeth, but that's about it. I want to be healthy and look like me.
  • I'm just doing the basic stuff.  Toning up my arms, whitening my teeth (and giving up red wine for the past couple of months before the wedding - it is seriously KILLING me), and unfortunately fake baking a bit because I have swimsuit tan lines that I need to get rid of.  Oh, and I guess I'm trying to drink more water!

And, for the record, that bridalplasty TV show makes me sick.  Seriously, what have we come to as a society?

  • I;ve been thinking about a little nip and tuck before the big day but Danny Baker is booked solid!
  • You know KA, if you check Smooth Synergy, it's the day spa just a block or two down from Bloomies, they're having Spa Week.  $50 for a 60 minute massage. Most of their facials and massages are marked down this week if you want to indulge yourself.

  • I got a massage and a mani/pedi before the wedding.  It didn't drastically change my looks, but I felt relaxed on the wedding day, and that was worth a lot.
  • I got braces again.  I had them when I was younger, but I didn't wear my retainer.  That was a costly mistake.

I was going to get them anyway, but I decided to do it before the wedding because I wanted my smile to look good in the pictures.  They come off June 10, so that leaves plenty of time to whiten them before the big day.

I agree with PPs about wanting to look like myself.  If I showed up with a nose job, boob lift and lipo, FI would be freaked out.
  • You really should thank me for the tip about Smooth Synergy.  It could make your entire week!

I got a chipped tooth fixed at the dentist. And, if you knew how I felt about the dentist, you'd KNOW what a sacrifice this was - involved heavy sedation, so much so, my then-FI had to drive me, get the instructions for aftercare, and drive me home.

I also covered up a tattoo on my inner ankle for the wedding. It was a representation from my first wedding, and I did not want a reminder that "oh yeah, this is your second marriage" when I looked at these pictures.

Otherwise, I did my own hair, makeup, etc.

  • I've been on a fairly strict diet for about a month and will continue it until the wedding. I plan to whiten my teeth and I have broken down and gone to the tanning bed. Which is sad because I had been "clean" for two years. I won't go any more after the wedding though. I also plan to have my hair color touched up one extra time before the wedding so it looks fresh. I will be doing my own make-up, but scheduling mani/pedi/wax at a spa.

As for the cosmetic surgery - I, personally, wouldn't nip or tuck or enhance anything just for my wedding, and I don't think shows like Bridalplasty are healthy influences, but since I don't reallly have a moral problem with plastic surgery, I wouldn't judge someone that used a wedding as an excuse to go under the knife, if they were plannng on doing it anyway and could otherwise afford to make that decision. I DO, however, think that dental issues are something that, if I had, I would completely fix before my wedding. I don't consider dental changes to be "cosmetic" for the most part.

  • I did absolutely nothing that I didn't do already. I wanted to look like me when I got married so nothing changed at all.

  • I had my tattoos removed via laser treatment.  Six sessions with a total cost of around $2,000 and more pain than the original tattoo!

I want to get braces again.  I didn't wear my retainer either, now I have the 'Madanna Gap'.

I had plastic surgery almost three years ago.  I think I did it for the right reasons.  I think to have it done for one day is ridiculous.

I'll probably try to shed a few pounds, but I need to do that for health reasons anyway, a wedding would just give me a little motivation.

  • I don't think I'm planning on doing anything too drastic. Probably some teeth whitening, but just the box kind not from the dentist. I also want to tone my arms, and do some hair waxing but I usually do that anyway. I don't think I'd get plastic surgery for any reason, so not for my wedding either.

  • I showered the morning of my wedding. Does that count? Oh, and I got a mani/pedi the day before, but that's it.
  • edited April 2011
The only things I will be doing the day of is getting my hair and makeup professionally done.  But I don't consider that a wedding specific accordance.  I have my hair and makeup done for most other special events I go to, so I'm not just doing it because it's my wedding. I'll also be getting my nails done prior, but I get my nails done regularly so I especially don't consider that wedding specific. Also if I had the extra money now, I would be getting my breasts done before the wedding, but once again, not just because it's my wedding.  I've been wanting to get them done since I was 17 (I'm 24 now), but I just can't afford plastic surgery and a wedding, so my boobs will have to wait until after the wedding.

The only reason I would prefer to get them done before the wedding (once again only if I could afford it) is because, like I said, I plan on eventually getting them done and I would have liked to look the same in my wedding photos as I will be looking after.  But my boobs will be covered-up anyway, so I don't think I'll be looking that much different.
  • Angie, good idea. I'm happy with my deicsion and investment, but it was something I did for myself, not a day.

Anyone who got implants FOR their wedding would be sorely disappointed if they didn't allow enough recovery time and had hard square boobs for their ceremony.

Thanks.  I definitely want the boobs for myself and no one or anything else.  It's something I've been thinking about for a long while and it wasn't a decision I came to lightly.

And that's a good point about the recovery time, and is also another reason I can't get my breasts done before the wedding.  I'm taking all my time off from work for this year for the honeymoon so I don't have any extra time to take off for recovery.

I'm working out a lot more, and harder... it just gives me a lot of extra motivation. And I'm back to dieting. I also cut cheese fries out of my diet, which, for me, is seriously drastic. And I'm getting a facial a month before the wedding and I'll be whitening my teeth.

I think the plastic surgery is ridiculous though... it's one day, and it's about your relationship and becoming married, not about how big your boobs/lips, etc. are.

And most people getting plastic surgery just look weird afterwards, imo.

  • I have been getting monthly facials and going to the dermatologist more often.  I was already getting facials every now and then; I just amped it up a little.  I'm going to do the OTC tooth whitening.  I'll have my makeup and hair done professionally on the wedding day.
  • I'm doing better with my diet and exercise, but I consider that to be more for my general health than I do for the wedding in particular.

I am planning to do OTC teeth whitening, a professional mani/pedi, and have my hair & makeup professionally done, but that's about it.

My FI wants to marry me the way I look now, why would I significantly change that for one day?

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • This is similar to what others have said, but I have been using the wedding as a motivator to make healthier choices.  I joined a gym and started working out 5-6 times a week, which hasn't changed my weight much, but I'm definitely more toned.  I'm working on my arms as well, because my dress is strapless.  I did one round of whitening on my teeth, and they look better.  I'm trying to get a little time in the sun every week, so I'll have some color for the big day.

The most extreme thing, in my mind, is that I'm paying someone to do my hair and makeup for the wedding and it's pretty pricey.  I would never get plastic surgery for cosmetic reasons, and I definitely want to look like 'me' on my wedding day, freckles and all!
