Hi everyone,
I'm popping over from my usual place at thebump.
I am giving a toast at my sister's wedding this weekend. I figured out the content, timed my delivery once, and I took just under 3 minutes (it is a little less than 500 words).
I am wondering what is the etiquette for speech length at a reception? There will be speeches from 4 siblings total (2 per side), plus parents' speeches so there will be more speeches than average. So I don't want mine to be too long. However, the guests will not have been to a ceremony beforehand (the ceremony is immediate family only), so they might like some more ceremony-ish behavior during the reception. In fact, I went to a reception like this and it was really great that there were actually a fair number of heartfelt speeches at the start of the reception for those of us (90% of guests) who were not at the ceremony.
I looked online and I saw recommended length was 3-5 minutes. But someone else told me 2 min. Would 3 min be too long? I have a part I can cut out but I'd rather not.
What would you want for your wedding?
