Starving children.

Is it more important to feed the children who go without food in your own country or just send your money to foreign countries instead?

  • I'm kidding. It's terrible, but i worry about here. There are kids in my old neighborhood that came to school everyday with no lunch that i shared with. I think its great when people donate to anything, but for me, here comes first.

  • I think poverty over seas is far more severe than ours, so I support sending money abroad.  But, people can do what they want, I don't care which poor children they help.

But a steady diet of Timbits and poutine isn't really healthy, now is it?

Actually, screw that.  I'd love a steady diet of Timbits and poutine.

To actually answer your question, I don't think either is more or less important.  I hope most people do their part to end hunger worldwide.
  • I don't think any one kid is worth more than any other kid.  Kids are starving all over, so it's good that some choose to feed the ones here and some choose to feed the ones elsewhere.

  • Honestly, I would say if they truly are starving children, our country comes first.  All children are equal, but if our children in the US, they still have a much higher likelihood of living lives, than ones in foreign countries where even if they are fed, there are so man other problems that are going on the children will still probably not live into their 30s. And if they do, they will most likely just produce numerous other also starving children.

However, I don't think there are many, if any, truly "starving" children in the US. So, I suppose if your question asks who would I donate to if I was going to chose one, probably them.

I can see the opposite side though, that living in a country witha  higher cost of living severely affects "poor" children in the US. Things like education, clothing, etc all cost a lot here, so if you can't even afford food, that child is not going to go far, at all. Whereas in many other countries, it's all about survival and donating there will allow a child to live, but that's pretty much it. I can see both sides.

  • My company is heavily involved in the United Way in our city.  There ARE children in the US and Canada who don't get a proper breakfast and lunch.  Who knows what they get when they get home.

Honestly, feeding children is low on my list of charities to donate to, but since it's my money, I really can use or donate it in whatever way I want.  I just thought it was ridiculous that someone would determine that $1000 shoes are bad and that money should be used for a specific charity - particularly when that charity is one that isn't even in her own country.

  • We have so many people in our own country (U.S., that is) who are in need of help - food for the starving, shelter for the homeless - we need to take care of our own.

I get (slightly) irritated when I see all of the benefits and celebrities (American citizens!) spending millions of dollars on assistance for other countries, when we have our own problems right here.

I donate to and volunteer with several charities that keep the money right here in the U.S.

Plus, I'd give my money to an animal shelter or a spay/neuter organization before I fed any children. That's just the way I roll. I like puppies and kitties.
  • Then the starving children steal food.. then they go to juvey... then they meet other street kids... then they learn other crimes... and then it perpetuates a vicious circle.  Happens all the time.

THIS! This one time, my 4 year old niece asked me to make her eggs. So i did. Then she pushed the plate away and said "i kidding".

That kick to her ribs afterwards taught her to not do that again!

  • Yeah, I honestly don't understand how anyone says one is "more important" than the other.  We are born where we are born by sheer accident; it has nothing to do with our (or their) value or importance.  That kind of baffles me.

I can understand based on things like the level of corruption, the percentage of $$ that actually goes to help folks v. advertising or management, that kind of stuff.  But to say it's more important to help our own is . . . strange to me.
  • I do think part of the reason the US has so many children living in poverty is because of government inaction. Other countries don't have the luxury of a functioning government, so there's that.
