NWR: Ikea couches?

Has anyone bought a couch from Ikea?

We just finished painting the "man cave" and our old couches from the apartment look horrible.  We found this online at ikea, and will go to the store to sit on them probably after the wedding, but I'd love to hear if any long-time owners of ikea couches think its worth the $899 or if we should save up and spend $2000 on something from Macy's or Ashley?

  • I don't own one, but my friend has a similar one, and it's very comfortable.  You'll need some pillows for the arms if you'd like to lay down (that would be Matt's complaint).  But I would definitely go for it!

My brother and sis-in-law have a couch from Ikea and they love it.  Plus, you can switch out the cover if you want a different color.
  • I have an ikea sofa bed and I love it.  We did have to re-enforce it because the bed part wasn't the most secure but it's very comfortable.

  • We have 2 couches and a chair from IKEA that we caught on sale for $700 for all three. They're pretty comfrotable and have held up well for the last year. The particular couches we bought are small in size, (that was intentioinal) and I often wish we had couches that were larger, but they serve their purpose well.

  • In terms of quality, they don't tend to hold up for as long or as well as others.  That was a main reason we didn't purchase one here.
  • We were at IKEA yesterday, and they look nice enough.  There's a big variety, though, in size and price.  If you're willing to go for something a little smaller (but not little), you can spend a lot less, I think.

This is something I forgot to mention. H and I bought these with the knowledge and plan that we'd need to buy some in a year or two. We've had them almost a year, (we bought them in August) and they're doing pretty well so far. The cushions are foam and they need fluffing, which isn't easy since it's foam.
  • Jess, I have those same throw pillows!

  • I love them! I am a polka-dot person, so when I saw those, I was sold. :)

At that price I would look at Crate & Barrel. They have nice stuff in a similar price range. We have items from both stores (though the Ikea couch/futon I have was several hundred bucks cheaper) and I've found the C&B stuff is holding up better.

  • the same sectional shape and size at C&B is like $3000.  They're just couches for the basement, but we plan to live in this house for at least 5 years, and we're putting our entertainment system down there.

Really we want a sectional that is black, and they're really hard to find!  Ikea has it but not in the quality we'd like. . .

  • I have the Karlstad and it has held up pretty well!

  • There are plenty of non-IKEA couches that cost less than 2k. Our first couch was from Ashley furniture and was $500. We just got couches from a furniture store for $700 a piece.

  • I just have to add that really, sofas are the only thing I wouldn't buy from Ikea.  Their mattresses are some of the highest rated in Europe, and I love ours.  I think that's really the one thing they fall pretty short on, furniture-wise.

Not big enough, but we did look at it.

Amoro,  my original instinct is on par with what you're saying.  I have some bookshelves from ikea that are great, but the couches do look kinda shoddy.

The problem is that we're looking for a very particular shape (the link in the original post). and in black (for his steelers colored room) so. . .
  • We bought some stuff at the Room Store and really love it.

  • I love Ikea, although you get what you pay for and their stuff doesn't last forever!

  • i love ikea for the small things.  they are great for vases, lamps, rugs, etc, but their actual furniture is crap.  i think it's uncomfortable and really overpriced for the lack of quality.

i think a lot of people automatically assume that Ikea is going to be the cheapest for furniture, but you'd be surprised if you look at some of the other furniture stores.  We got all of our furniture from Ashley (dining set, black sectional sofa & side tables, bedroom set).  It is great quality and looks amazing.

we have an IKEA couch. VERY comfy! We needed something quick and didn't have much money at the time... 3 years later and it's still SUPER comfy!!! I would definitely get one again.
