**sucrets**

I used to sing, in high school and college.  I miss it.  And, now that volleyball is over and I'm not coaching this winter, I'm sort of bored.  I kind of want to find an amateur choir to sing with, but I have no idea where to start looking, since I don't go to church (agnostic), and I don't plan to start.

As the resident vocal music expert - got any suggestions on where to look, what to google, any organizations that might have a Louisville, KY affiliate organization I could look for?

  • Well, if you're into Barbershop, there's usually lots of local SPEBSQSA chapters that you can look into.  They're usually mainly older people, but it's a nice low pressure environment.

You can also look into some colleges in the area - a lot of schools have adult or community choirs that rehearse in the evenings, especially some smaller schools.  I know my college used the community choir for conducting rehearsal, so it was beneficial for everyone.

Colleges usually also have auditioned choirs, but I'm not sure if you're wanting something like that.

Um, some towns also have an independently run community band/choir that you could look into.

It's sad that I've had a bunch of opportunities here to get involved, but I just haven't.  I miss singing with a group.

  • Oh, pick me, pick me! Look into the Throughbread Chorus. Its an A Capella group. My brother is in it this year :)

  • LVB, the website says the Thoroughbred Chorus is an all mens group.  And the photos support that.  :(  I'm a soprano (used to be 1 in HS, probably 2 now, would be better).  I KNOW I can't fake being a Tenor.  :D

Sucrets - I don't mind auditioning - so long as I can get in.  :)  I'm out of practice, so I'm rusty on that account, but when practicing I'm decent enough that this isn't a completely hairbrained idea.  My college didn't have things for non-students, so I didn't think of that.   I googled for that alphabet soup you mentioned - and here's what it returned:  http://www.louisvilleweddingmusic.com/home.html  Gah!  Maybe I have to wait until we move to Boston.  Perhaps the fact that I CAN and DO pronounce my R's will help there at an audition?

  • There aren't even any religious groups on that list that are within a 1 hour drive other than all mens groups.  I had no idea there was such a lack of options for women.  That stinks!

  • UofL is here, as is Bellarmine University.  I'll try calling the Bellarmine music dept. and see if they know of anything.

  • Boo, I'm sorry.  :(

Your state probably has a chapter of the American Choral Director's Association, but I don't know how helpful that would be.  It's more geared to school teachers, but might have some performance opportunities on there.

  • Well, I'll keep on it.  And let you know if I find something, just in case anybody else is nuts enough to ask, too.  :)

  • You did!  I wouldn't have thought of the colleges on my own.  Now, if you want to make the calls. . . ;)  I hate phone calls.  I LOVE email.  Good thing I'm in this generation.
