Books

I dont know if anyone is around, but ive noticed lately a lot of people with reading tickers in their sigs, and people with book covers as well.

Im just curious what everyone is reading right now? Any good recommendations of something youve read lately? (biography, fiction, cook book, whatever)

Re: Books

  • I just finished The Lovely Bones and now I'm not sure what I'm going to read..probably "Certain Girls"
  • Mine's in my sig because it's a damn club board challenge. I pick and choose the challenges I want to be involved in. Mostly I pick the not stupid ones.

    Recent reads:

    Jane Eyre
In Other Rooms, Other Wonders - short stories that take place in Pakistan. Recommended.
Olive Kitteridge - Chapters describe different characters and scenes, but all center around a stoic retired school teacher in a small New England town. Highly recommended.
    my read shelf:
Meredith's book recommendations, liked quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)

  • I've been hitting some classics that I haven't read in years.

    • 3 Musketeers
    • Count of Monte Cristo
    • The Prince
    • The complete Sherlock Holmes
  • Ive been meaning to read Atlas Shrugged, my best friend loves it and I keep meaning to borrow it but then every time I see her I forget to grab it. I really enjoyed The fountainhead, so I am going to assume I will like Atlas Shrugged. I just finished Bag of Bones by Stephen King, and it was really good, sucked me right in. Im also just started the New rules of lifting for women, I finally got around to buying it.

Atlas Shrugged is a great book. I read The Fountainhead first as well, and loved both of them.

I just finished re-reading The Lovely Bones and The Secret Life of Bees. I wanted to re-read them before I saw the movies, if I decide to.

A lot of my reading taste runs to murder mysteries and the like, I have read pretty much every Patricia Cornwell, Agatha Christie, Mary HIggins Clark etc ever written.

A fun read is Clive Cussler's Atlantis Found. Interesting, easy read, with the ever comical hero Dirk Pitt crashing all the bad guy's parties.

One I want to read is The Kite Runner -- has anyone ever read it?
  • I'm actually reading a book about Norse mythology, it's pretty interesting :) I just finished Alice in Wonderland, which I actually didn't love as much as I expected, and before that I read Treasure Island, which I loved. I'm apparently just now realizing how many classics I never read, and am trying to catch up. I'm also going to read the Pigman soon, because I'm starting another long term subbing job in which I will teach that, and haven't read it yet.

  • Ooooh The Kite Runner is fabulous.  I still need to read A Thousand Splendid Suns, but I'll get to it eventually.

  • For non-fiction: The Magician's Book and David Starkey's Monarchy series (brilliantly written, even if he is a bit of a troll).

    Fiction: the Sookie Stackhouse series.

I'm reading Atlas Shrugged right now! I'm only like 60 pages in so far.  It's gonna take me forever.  DH has been trying to get me to read it ever since he got me to read The Fountainhead.
  • Small world! Tell me how you like it when you finally finish it! Did your husband end up finishing Under the dome, julez??

It took me months to read Atlas Shrugged.  I am glad I read it but I would not say that I enjoyed it (but that may have more to do with me disagreeing with Ayn Rand's philosophies than anything).

I loved The Kite Runner.  I have read a lot of books in the last few years that I have loved:  The Lovely Bones, The Memory Keeper's Daughter, The Time Traveller's Wife, The Poisonwood Bible (honestly one of the best books I have ever read), Three Cups of Tea, The Secret Life of Bees, and The Glass Castle come to mind.

I am currently rereading (for the thousandth time) Me Talk Pretty One Day.   If you like to laugh, I highly recommend any of David Sedaris's books.

  • i feel like i'm in the middle of 5 books right now, but the most recent is the book thief. after that i want to read lamb. and finish merle's door.
  • I also liked Me Talk Pretty One Day, and I agree with you that The Poisonwood Bible is possibly my favorite book ever. I like most stuff by Barbara Kingsolver, but have heard mixed reviews about her newest book, The Lacuna. I haven't read it yet.

  • I am currently reading Thomas Hardy's Far From The Maddening Crowd.

    Its fantastic so far.

  • Nebb - He's still working on it.  I think he wants to take his time with it.  And both of our books right now are just too darn big to lug around to read anywhere but the apartment.  I'll definitely let you know about AS.  I loved The Fountainhead and totally didn't expect to.
  • I am about halfway through Atlas Shrugged. (It is the Fountainhead, but about railroads rather than architecture). Ayn Rand and I have a love/hate relationship.

I recently read "The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse" and it was really amazing. It is about a woman who pretends to be a man to work as a Catholic priest on the reservation. It questions the importance of organized religion versus spirtualiy, and also addresses gender identity.

  • I loved the fountainhead too, it was really well written. I think your husband will like Under the dome.. it really hangs around with you, because you have so much time to get to know all of the characters. Has he read the Dark Tower books?
  • Oh The Dark Towers, Nick has read those a thousand times.
    Photobucket
  • He's read all the Dark Towers at least twice.  He gets all excited Reading Under the Dome and I get in a little bit of trouble when I interrupt Innocent
  • I would like to add that I think there is nothing great about Gatsby. It seems like I am in the minority concerning that opinion though.

  • Im half way through my 2nd time reading the dark tower (i finally completed my collection at christmas), but I have 6 stephen king books ive never read sitting in my bookshelf. I want to go back to the dark tower so bad right now, especially after reading bag of bones and seeing connections to the dark tower. It always excites me when things of his are connected.
  • I am an avid reader... but not a literary snob ;) That means I read anything from Pride and Prejudice, Dorian Gray, Of Mice and Men (just finished that again lol) to Harry Potter and chick lit.

    I love books.

This dorky one I'll recommend is called "Believe" (can't remember the author for the life of me). It's about this professor who goes back in time thanks to Merlin and meets and falls in love with Sir Galahad. I'm ashamed to admit I loved that book!

  • I just got done reading

First they killed my father-fantastic book
    Things fall apart
All quiet on the western front

and I'm currently reading Craig Furgueson's American on purpose

  • *runs and hides from all the Ayn Rand love in this thread*

I just reread Harpo Marx's autobiography, and I think it's something that everybody should read. It will make you a fan of the Marx Brothers.

Other than that, I pretty much don't have time for pleasure reading. I just sent the first draft of my makor exam bibliography to my advisor, and the bibliography alone is sixteen pages long.

My aunt taught Loung Ung at Essex Junction High in VT!  I read First They Killed My Father after getting to know some Cambodian American students in college.
