Awesome/Awful name

FMIL gave me her guest list in all Mr. & Mrs. John Smith. I know all the names except for one that I had to ask. Glad I did...

I would address her first name as “Junior”.  My dad’s brother was named Stanley and her name is Stanlita.  She goes by Junior and that’s what we have always called her

Re: Awesome/Awful name

  • Ha!  We had some weird ones, too.  I had to have a few envelopes redone--FI has family members named "Jim" and "Ben," not James and Benjamin.  I thought that was strange.

  • My mom went to school with a girl named after her father. Her name was Jonatha. True story.

  • Both of those are very strange. Where do people come up with these things??

  • The local radio station I list to did something like this.  People called up with the worst names they have heard of either in their family or friends.  One girl called up and said her friend named her daughter Meconium!  ewwww.  Apparently the doctor brought it up and she thought it was so beautiful, the word, not the meaning....maybe she didn't know the meaning.  but ewwww
  • We had one.

    Aunt Terry.

I asked what Terry's real name was.

    Everyone told me Terry.

The response card came back with Theresa. Thanks for not knowing your relative's names! Idiots!

And he has an Uncle Jimmy.  His name isn't James, just Jimmy.
  • One of my best friends in HS is named Karachie Harchie W____, as in KAY rush ee HA shee. She went by Harchie, which is her parents names mushed together, Harvey and Rachel. Her parents were intelligent, grounded people, but they came up with weird names. Her little sister's name is Ranchealla, and her brother is Hardell. It seems almost vain to name all of your kids versions of your names.

  • My grandfather technically doesn't have a name.  Just initials.  JT.  Once, when renewing his drivers' license, the girl told him he'd have to have his full name on there.  He told her it's just JT.  "J only, T only".  She put Jonly Tonly on his license, and he had to get a birth certificate to get it fixed.

My mother rebelled, I guess, against naming a child something that she knew she'd never call him/her.  So, in my family we have a Terri (not Theresa), a Jack (not John), and a Peggy (not Margaret).  She decided to do this after naming my oldest sister Mary Linda but calling her, from day one, Mindy.

Mindy got so much crap from the nuns at school who insisted on calling her "Mary" that our mom decided to just go with the nicknames.

ETA: anyone else familiar with the rockabilly duo The Collins Kids?  Their names are Lawrence and  Lawrencine Collins.  Not nice, Mr. and Mrs. Collins!
  • My sister named her daughter Paige Forte.
Yeah, their last name is pronounced like the number, not the military building.

    LOL!

ohwhynot--I respect your mom for that! I never understood the whole thing about naming someone something just so you can call them a shortened version. I guess it gives them options if they ever want to go by another version...
Still, I think it's cool she went with the nickname since that's really what she wanted!

  • I was so late to the last bad name thread, so I'll include here that I went to elementary school with a boy named Labeeb, emphasis on the second syllable.

<div>I think this comes into play for family names more than made up names. So I want to name my first son after his great grandfather, John, but I'll actually be following convention to call him Jack (which is what my grandfather was called as well), and FI and I agree on Jack. I don't know if that makes sense but it's helpful when you're dealing with different or dated family names as well.</div>
