Fashion "Rules"

The earlier fashion post made me think about how I have certain "rules" that I follow when I pick out clothes.  For example, I never wear a skirt or dress longer than knee length because I'm short and I feel like longer skirts make me look dumpy.  I also never wear button down shirts because I can never find one that doesn't gap over my boobs.

What fashion guidelines do you follow?

  • Holy crap, OWN, your sig pic got huge. But I like it, it's a great picture.

I don't really know any fashion rules. I'm not a very fashionable person so I pretty much wear whatever I can get away with at work without being sent home or whatever doesn't make me look like I just got paid for servicing someone.
  • I don't wear short skirts...usually knee length for many reasons, mostly I hate my knees...actually I hate most knees.  Also the super short skirt trend looks super skanky IMO.  I'm a super prude in that I generally believe that at least 50% of my body should be covered when I'm outside of my own home.  No religious beliefs here just don't want to.  FI calls my style "frumpy sexy"  I'm not sure how I feel about that :)
  • The only rules I follow are one print piece at a time or one loud accessory.

AliGirl I don't think the cami under makes your boobs look bigger.

Mmm, I doubt it, but I don't know what your boobs look like.  :)  The button down still covers your boobs, it just gives you room.

I guess I do follow some rules: if your belt loops are showing, you need a belt.  Your belt should go with your shoes - like black belt can't go with brown shoes and vice versa.

  • And just to clarify, I don't mean rules in the sense that everyone should follow them, just personal rules that you have created for yourself.

I never wear short sleeves or button-down tops. I used to have big boobs and they were the worst looks for my body type. I'm a very small size now, but still feel short, fat and dumpy when I try on either of those.

Edited because boobs and books are definitely not the same thing!

I flipped through this book in Borders that told you what clothing/makeup colors to wear based on that stuff.  Your skin tones and hair colors and whatnot.  It sounds so hokey but its dead on.

They didnt tell me if I was vibrant or not though.  I feel cheated.   Maybe I'm a dull summer.

I agree with this. I think it's the only rule I follow? Everything else is pretty flexible, depending on the individual clothes, outfit and situation. But whenever I try on something with horizontal stripes I just remember WHY I don't buy things with horizontal stripes. I also rarely wear white.

Oh, and I can't stand black and brown together. Brown and navy, maybe, but I actually have black, brown and navy shoes to go with any outfit. Ditto East on the v-necks. I don't buy them exclusively (depends on the shirt) but they certainly flatter me.

  • Okay personal rules (though I do make it a rule not to follow fashion rules):

     - no more than one "trend" piece at a time.

     - I'm a very definite winter so I tend to wear colours that compliment that, and a lot of black, grey and white.

     - high heels whenever possible.

     - matching underwear. I'm hardcore OCD about it... and many other things come to that...

     - wear big earrings, bracelets or necklaces. Never all three together. Big rings can be paired with anything.

     - I love mixing patterns and textures. I rarely wear an outfit all the same texture or material.

     - accessories are key; I never don't have any on (whether it's jewelry, scarves, sunglasses or a hat)

     - when leaving the house, mascara and lip balm are a must

  • If it doesn't have a hood, I don't wanna wear it.

But I can dress up if I have to.

If my shoes aren't uggs, crocs, golf shoes, or flip flops, I'm probably ornery until I can change them.

    uhhhh....yeah. That's about it.

No. Okay, well maybe. But I match my bra to my undies. It drives me NUTS if I've got a black bra and I dunno, green boyshorts. NUTS.

  • I am wearing horizontal stripes, I happen to think I look quite nice :)

For the button-downs, the ideal is to buy a shirt that fits your boobs and get the waist taken-in. I saw it on What Not to Wear, so it has to be true!

I don't wear olive green or tan because those colors make me look awful. Other than that, I'll try most things.

  • I'm not very fashionable, but I tend to go for stuff that is "classic" - solid colors, clean lines, etc. rather than things that are super trendy or ruffly or anything like that. I don't look good in ruffles. Or babydolls. Or leggings. And I don't wear skirts that are shorter than knee length, because I am pretty tall with very pale, fat thighs and nobody wants to see all that.

  • Navy confuses me.  Can I wear it with black shoes? What color shirt? So confusing.

I stick to black pants, except for jeans.  Any other color just confuses me on the bottom.
My underwear matches too, Alix. My underwear matches my bra, and both coordinate with my outfit. I also tend to buy things that are solid or have subtle patterns/designs. the only silk-screened clothes I have are t-shirts I hang out in on the weekend. I'm not sure what season I am. Don't hate me, but I don't look bad in most colors, including colors some people hardcore avoid, like yellow and orange.
    Posted by msmerymac
I like to wear orange too. In fact, I am wearing orange right now. And I'm pretty non-particular about colors in general - I generally prefer bright colors, though.
