Destination Wedding with At Home Reception Etiquette

Hello! I am planning a destination wedding in June 2013 with an "at home" reception in August 2013. When it comes to save the dates and invitations, do I include the "at  home" reception date on the save the date, or do I only put the ceremony date on the save the date, and include the  "at home" reception information in the invitation that will follow? Suggestions would be awesome. Thanks!

Re: Destination Wedding with At Home Reception Etiquette

  • Save the Dates are for if you are advising people you will be inviting them to your WEDDING so they can make any plans well in advance to attend! People invited to just the reception would not get a STD.

<div>Inviting people to just the at home reception would be rude.  Receptions are for people invited to the wedding.  People who do AHR's should invite everyone to the DW and then have the AHR later for those that didn't/couldn't attend.  But anyone invited to the AHR should also have the option of going to the DW if they choose.</div>

From your questions it sounds like you are inviting everyone to both - great, that is the proper way to do it.

    1. The save the date should be just for the wedding (as the DW is the part that requires the most planning for guests).

2, In the invite I would have an insert with the at home reception information. The RSVP card I would have two sections on it one for the DW & one for the at home reception portion.

ETA: As long as you are inviting everyone to both you can call the second one a reception; however, I would tone done the wedding stuff (wear the dress, but no first dance, no cake cutting, no garter toss, etc.)

  • I would probably just send out the at home reception invitation after or right around the time of the wedding.

However, if everyone can make it to the DW, you might not even need the AHR, you know? So I wouldn't make promises like, "oh, if you can't come, there will be a party later."
