Special Roles other than Bridesmaids and Groomsmen?

My fiance and I have decided to keep our wedding party small for a few reasons including tight ceremony space.  What are some other special roles we can give to close friends who are not in the wedding party?

  • Ushers, readers, musicians.  There's not much beyond that.

  • guest.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

You can have ushers--we are having our uncles, since they will, between them, know most of the guests.  You also need witnesses for your marriage license.  Depending on what kind of ceremony you're having, you might have readings or other things for people to do.  But, as Anna said, being a guest is enough of an honor, so you don't really need to make up lots of things for people to do if it would feel forced.

ETA: I'm a slow typer, many people suggested guest in addition to Anna!

  • Ziti, for a moment I was absolutely appalled at you for suggesting guest book attendant. Now I'm just apalled that you forgot dead-beta-scooper.

    Don't forget money dance collector.
  • Yes, and do not forget to have your biggest toughest looking friend as the money dance collector. He will scare people into giving more money.

Jokes aside, a guest will be fine :) You could also make sure you take some pictures with them as well. I did not have a bridal party but my closest friends all went to the Vegas sign with us after there ceremony to take some fun pictures.

    DAMMIT!
  • Very funny everyone:)  Sounds like bridesmaids, groomsmen, ushers and readers are the only legitimate roles... but I would like to see a friend's reaction if I has him/her to be my crumb sweeper.

<div>Do it.  It would be awesome.  You could give them a bedazzled silent butler as their gift for being in your wedding!  ZOMG!!!1!!</div><div>

  • Oooh, one of my bridesmaids and I have joked for years that we're making each other cut and deliver cake. And guard the guest book/card holder.  But crumb butler really takes that to a whole new level!!  I love it!!

  • A few years ago a friend of mine got married, I was not asked to be in her wedding I was just invited.  You know what I thought "Yes!".  I loved this friend and would have been honored to be in her wedding, BUT I liked being just a guest and not having to have a certain roll.  I was able to leave when I wanted to, I didn't have to wear something special, and I did not have to take my whole weekend for this wedding just one day.

Moral of my story is that many friends would not be hurt not being in your wedding they would actually be just fine with it.
