How To Let Guests Know it is a Black Tie Wedding?

My fiance and I will be having a very formal black tie evening wedding.

For the most part, I think half of our guests know the proper etiquette and know proper dressing.

However, I am thinking how to address it for the other half.

Will putting black tie in the invite be appropriate?

I go to a few Black Tie events every year and they always say when it is Black Tie, but I am not sure if the same is ok for a wedding.

  • If it is a true Black Tie reception (live band, table side ordering, waitstaff in very dressy attire/gloves, full open premium bar, etc.), you can print Black Tie in the lower right hand corner of your invites.  In keeping with black tie, those invites need to be engraved or letterpress, black ink on white or ivory stock.

  • I honestly would put it on the invitation. Like PP fancy invitations convey a fancy event. I would put it under the venue info.

This isn't something that's optional.  Etiquette dictates that it goes in the lower right corner of the invite, by itself.

  • Ditto Squirrly, bottom right corner, on it's own.

If it's not truly "Black Tie" then put "Black Tie Optional"
  • Isn't it super nit picky to tell people how to dress?
