any signifigance?

This may be a silly question...But I have seen pictures of the bride walking down the aisle and sometimes she will be on her Dad's right arms and sometimes on the left.  Is there a right/wrong way to do this?  Is there any signifigance in doing it one way or the other?  Or is it just personal preferance?

Re: any signifigance?

  • Woman are supposed to be escorted on the left arm of a man because in olden times, the man would need his right arm free to grab his sword if they ran into trouble.  That's what our officiant told us anyway.  We all were escorted on the men's left arms.

  • In the olden days a lady walked on a mans left so his right hand was free to grab his sword. Traditionally the groom side is the right side of teh wedding church and the brides side is the left side.
  • I've (to the best of my memory) always seen the bride on her escort's left side. And then she stands on the groom's left side when she gets to the front. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but don't Jewish brides stand to the right of their grooms?

  • Yes, I don't know why/what it but Jewish brides stand on the other side. (So the father is to the left of the bride) They also usually walk down the aisle with their mother on the bride's right. Anyone know why? I'm interested.
  • I am not sure the reasoning, but in a Jewish wedding the women are on the right. The bridesmaids are on the right and the bride is on her father's right (with her mother on the left). In Christian ceremonies the women are always on the left; bridesmaids on the left and bride on her father's left. I am sure there is a reason why they are different but I do not know why, I just know that is the way it is done.
