Christmas decorations? Really?!

Is it just me? Is it not crazy early to have the Christmas decor up in your house?

My neighbour has their Christmas lights, tree and house decked out in complete Christmas decor. Yell

I thought there was some unwritten rule that decorations don't go up before Dec 1.

  • All the decor was out in the stores in London, and the tv was filled with commercials for Christmas shopping.  It was crazy.  It starts earlier there than it does in the US, and I already thought that was insanely early too!
  • Yep same here in Australia.  Decorations have been out since Nov 1.  At least they wait until after Halloween.

Yeah I noticed that too, I decided it's because they don't have Thanksgiving to mark when it's appropriate to start the Christmas season.
  • It used to be that houses were decorated for Thanksgiving with, ya know, Thanksgiving day stuff. Like Autumn. Think Halloween, but without the fake cobwebs and plastic cauldrons.
But now it seems like people decorate their houses for Thanksgiving with Christmas decorations.
It's like the holidays season has blended into one mash-up holiday. Instead of several holidays to look forward to, it's one big long one.

  • I've already got my baskets and stuff out for Easter.

  • That doesn't shock me...I live in Lemoore, CA and tonight we just had our Annual Holiday Stroll....which is basically everyone walking in the downtown area, which is only 4 blocks long lol, there are christmas lights up, people singing carols, fire truck rides, and even good old st. nick is there! lol

  • My family is in the process of putting our Christmas decorations up. We usually wait till after Thanksgiving, but my mother wanted to do them early this year. The reason behind our early decoration is my very pregnant sister and her husband (who live several states away) are coming down for Thanksgiving to visit for the first time in 2 or 3 years, so we are doing a kind of compacted Holiday, celebrating Thanksgiving on Thursday and then doing a mini-Christmas Friday morning (and then a baby shower Friday afternoon, busy week!). So my mother wanted everything to feel Christmas-y.

Otherwise, I would say yes, it is fairly early to start decorating for Christmas, but not so early that it's crazy (like seeing Christmas displays at stores before Halloween has even arrived).

I can't stand Christmas.  I have no reason why.  I am not religious, but I find it completely has no meaning other than 'gfts.'

    <div>THANK YOU. </div><div>
</div><div>I'm too afraid of backlash to say this aloud.</div><div>
</div><div>My FBIL and FSIL are OBSESSED. Their house was decked out last week. Every year I get the stupid: "what do you guys want" facebook message.  Last year we were saving for a house and I was still in school, so I said:  "We have no money. How would you guys feel about putting a hold on the Christmas gift giving for this year, and do a double date dinner instead?" She lost her shiit and almost beheaded me. I will never make that mistake again.</div><div>
</div><div>I love seeing my whole family on Christmas day, but that really has nothing to do with Christmas. </div><div>
</div><div>I hate Christmas music, Christmas shopping, Christmas trees, decorations. I hate it all.</div><div>
</div><div>I'm optimistic however that when shoeguy and I have kids I'll be able to get it up for them and be all excited about seeing our kids be excited for Christmas.... who knows though.</div><div>
</div><div>As a weird aside, I think hating Christmas is in my genes. My grandfather, a WWII veteran was high up in the war.  On Christmas day during the war he had to send 20 men on a mission. Not one of them came back. I don't think he ever forgave himself or stopped remembering.  Even in his 80s, Christmas was just a reminder for him of the friends he lost.  I'm genetically predisposed to hating Christmas.</div>

  • Ha - I have no reason other that I just don't like it.  It's cold, snowing, dark.  Nothing about the end of December I enjoy.  Christmas has become all about gifts and such.  H and I don't do gifts, but we don't do gifts for any occasion really.

  • We put most of our outside stuff up this week because of the weather.  We try to get it done so we're not out there dealing with it in a snowstorm!  I always do the decorating inside the house on Thanksgiving & then the trees usually a week or two after that.  I LOVE Christmas & our house is decorated from top to bottom!!

  • It seems to get earlier and earlier each year! This year we saw some stores had Chrismas stuff in September!!!! It wasn't even Halloween! It wasn't even cold out! I usually don't feel like Christmas until after Thanksgiving! However...

I started decorating today! Just a little though....

But my FI and I just bought our house in June (to get the first-time tax refund) so this is our first house and we're hosting Christmas!!! So I'm super excited about it! Also my gift shopping is about halfway done already! I just keep finding perfect gifts for people!

Also, I don't really see what's so bad about liking Christmas for the presents! I'm not saying that's the only reason to like Christmas, not at all! But who doesn't like presents??? I genuinely enjoy getting gifts for all those I care about. I feel so happy watching them open them and know they feel the same way when I open the one they gave me!
Is it a greed thing? I do have a cousin who, for whatever reason, thinks our family is rich (we're not) and always asks "which one is your 'gift for a guy'? I'm going to pick that one 'cause you're loaded so it's something good!" while only gifting something cheap himself. But really I think most people aren't like that! Don't let them spoil it!
Or is it a money thing? It doesn't have to be expensive to be fun! One of my favorite traditions we have is getting funny/odd things for eachother from the dollar store (or anywhere, as long as it's way cheap!) And if it's hilarious/gross food (which it often is!) EVERYONE has to try it! There are other ways to keep the cost down too! Price limits, secret santas, etc.

I know I'm not going to change anyone's mind here or anything, lol! Just wanted to post my thoughts because it makes me sad to see people hating on Christmas when I love it so much!
