Flight 253: Is Anyone Else Surprised...

that the other passengers didn't kill the guy?  Or at least seriously maim him?
The reports so far seem to be that he was taken down in a pretty civilized manner.  I'm honestly shocked that they didn't attack him en mass...

  • No I'm not surprised. I don't think most good people out there have the capacity to murder someone.

  • BF said the same thing actually, but I wasn't suprised. From what I read it seemed like it was handled pretty quickly, I think it might have been worse otherwise.

  • Eh I guess everyone is different, but personally I would never want blood on my hands even in a case such as that. I'd be satisfied if he were getting buttraped in prison for the rest of his life.

  • DH was surprised. He would have maimed the guy, or at least broken a few of his bones.

  • I am a little suprised.  But more suprized at what the governement is doing.  There are a whole bunch of new TSA regulations for flying.....   If anyone is flying soon good luck
  • The first thing Buddy said when he heard that the guy had explosive powder strapped to his leg was "Great, now we're not going to be allowed to wear pants!"

Other passengers killing him hadn't even crossed my mind until I read this, really. Hm. I'm with ggmae - I am not surprised that he wasn't killed, but thinking about it, it is surprising that he didn't come out of it a bit more roughed up. Adrenaline runs high, I would assume, in such situations, so I'd expect that broken bones or bigger injuries would have resulted.

Any idea what some of the new regulations are? Are they banning any more items from being allowed on board?

  • GG - Air Canada is prohibiting passengers from leaving their seats or accessing carry ons in the last 60 minutes of the flight.  It looks like the TSA will start doing something similar.

Really? Wowww. It makes sense, but it sucks for all of us passengers who don't bring explosives on board.

I hate how a group of people can ruin it for the rest of us, but that's life I suppose.

  • FI says he would do some damage to the guy, but I think he's full of chit.  I think that if it really happened to him he'd rein himself in, especially with other people around and being in an airplane.  I could be wrong, but the few times I've seen him in a situation that could turn into a fight he's huffed and puffed and walked away.  But they weren't life threatening like that would be either, so who knows.

I too want to know the new regulations that will come about because of this.
  • Yeah, I don't think this girl and her world's smallest bladder can fly if those rules come into effect.

I'm not surprised that people didn't kill/maim him.
  • Julez - I also wonder what that rule would mean for people on flights <60 minutes. Whenever I have flown to DC from CT, it's always less than an hour. Guess it means no getting up!

DH has the stereotypical Army mentality to protect and take down if necessary, so I'm 100% sure he would have done something. Me on the other hand? Probably not. I freeze in situations like that.

I hope not!  I forget, are you carrying your dress on the plane?
  • Salt - DH's step-father flew from MD to CT today without any issues, but I'm sure it'd take longer than a day to get new rules up and running. We were worried he'd get delayed, but it worked out.

<div>Oh yes I definitely am taking the dress on the plane. I'm too afraid it would end up where I'm not.</div><div>
</div><div>gg - I'm glad that he didn't have any issues today. :) I wonder if anything will change for international flights though. I haven't left the country in like 10 years so I already know it will be a little stricter, but I'm interested to see to what degree. </div>

  • That photo is so great of both of you and I could see why it would annoy you. I'm glad I could help!!

  • I would have thought that at the least, the guy would have been bloodied up considerably in the face.

The 60 minute rule kind of doesn't make sense to me.  Just because this guy pulled this duirng the last hour of the flight doesn't mean that it's the only time someone would.  They're almost better off just banning carry ons completely (not that I want them to).

  • It has annoyed me for the longest time and I refused to frame it with that damn trash can in the picture. It looks much better now!
    image
  • If someone is trying to blow up the plane, there is no way me or my FI would just sit by and let it happen.  One of us would knock the crap out of him.
  • The 60-minute rule is only for International flights.

  • I'm not surprised at the "not killing" but I am surprised he didnt get battered more.
Sil was a wreck when we heard this on the news. Her mil flew out of Detroit on NW airs Wednesday. Luckily she's not going back for about a week or so. Compound that with the fact that her husband is going to Nigeria for the next 2 years and it made for a somewhat panicked sil.

I don't think my bladder could survive not being able to get up to pee on a flight :( That or access a carry on bag. I'd have a giant pile of books, gum, and hard candy on my lap the whole decent to get me through!
  • Someone should have killed his sorry a$$. I have zero sympathy for a person who does horrible things like this.
    image
  • I would imagine that most people wouldn't have known what was going on- certainly, that's what it sounds like from some of the interviews of other passengers- and might have presumed that the small explosion/fire had other causes (certainly, if I was on a plane and this happened, I wouldn't instantly think the person on fire was a terrorist). It would have been somewhat confusing for those who weren't right there to see if this guy was behaving in an odd manner etc, and once he was restrained, I guess there wasn't really a need to engage in any physical harm- particularly when most people probably weren't 100% sure on what had actually happened.
  • - Not allowed to have any items or anything on your lap for the last 1 hour of flight
    - Not allowed to go to toilet during that time either
    - Crew doesn't tell about cities or landmarks so passengers don't know where they are flying (it's so hard to time that on clock)

These re some of the rules.  I am also hearing rumblings of only 1 carry-on.  No carry on plus personal item  either one or the other.  I am flying to Italy on Thurs.  This is not good news.
