XP: How to go about getting alterations done

I'm mostly a lurker, but I was hoping to get some thoughts on Alterations at David's Bridal. I also posted this on the Attire Board, but since I lurk here the most and think you gals give great advice, I'm also posting it here. Sorry if this is a bit long. (Cliff Notes at bottom)

I bought my dress in Colorado when I came back to visit family for the holidays (we recently moved out of state). My FMIL is nice enough to store it in her house until the wedding.

The question I have though is how to proceed with alterations. I was going to ask my mom or FMIL to mail me the dress and take it to a place down here in Georgia. But my mom wants me to fly back for a weekend, get the initial fitting done next month, and then take care of any last minute changes when I fly out for the actual wedding (i'll be getting there 1 week before). My worry is that doing this will leave us in a time crunch, but she thinks it will be ok.

The dress fits me really well, so really all I think I'll need done is a slight hemming (just a few inches since I got the petite size), and a simple bustle.

What would you gals do?

CN: Bought my wedding dress in Colorado, but I am now living in Georgia. Would it be better to fly back, and have alterations done there over a weekend, or ask my mom to mail me the dress and get it fitted here? It would most likely be a simple hem and bustle that needs to be done.

Thanks in advance everyone!

  • I would probably do the alterations in Colorado.  I wouldn't want to be shipping the dress, just in case something would happen to it during transport.

  • I would do the alterations in your city. My mom wanted me to get it done my hometown too, but it was WAY easier doing it where I live. My dress fit perfect besides being too long, and I still needed to make 3 trips to get it shortened. With everything you'll be doing the week of your wedding, the last thing you should worry about is making sure your dress is done.

I'd get it done where you live.  My best friend was in your exact situation and when she was home for her shower this weekend she went to her fitting and the dress was too short.  She had to leave that day to go back home and won't be back until the week before the wedding.  You never really know how many fittings you'll end up needing to get it perfect.

  • Definitely get them done where you live.  It will be a lot less hassle and stress.  You can always make an appointment to have the dress steamed while you are in Colorado.
  • Definitely have it shipped to you. Get tracking and insurance JIC. One fitting might be enough, but then again, it might not be, and you don't want to wait until the last minute for these things.

  • Many David's Bridal locations have a sketchy rep for alterations.  Check your phone book for other locations as well, and don't leave the dress in their hands until you are satisfied with the quality of their work.

I met my DB seamstress,, and she was a blithering idiot who tried to convince me a visibly too-tight dress was the right size.  No way in Hades would I trust her with the one I finally bought.

  • If you bought/ordered the dress at David's Bridal, you may be able to call them and have it shipped to the DB in Georgia rather than it coming in at the DB in CO.  I live in Nebraska but was getting married back home in NY.  I bought the dress and did alterations at DB in Nebraska but had them ship it to NY after the final fitting as I did not want to deal with flying with it and I was afraid to ship it myself (they regularly ship dresses so they know how to do it and if something happened to it, it would be on them to fix/replace it).  I was then able to bring my dress into the DB in NY the week before for pressing.  So maybe you can call them, explain the situation and have them ship it.  But I think I would do the alterations where you are living rather than right before the wedding.  You don't want to add something else to that list the week before as there will be plenty of other things to do.

And I was nervous about doing alterations at DB (if you want them to ship it and press it, it has to be done there) because I had heard horror stories from friends at other DB but I had a wonderful time, it really varies by location.
