Wii Fit advice

Off-topic I know, but the wedding beauty boards are dead! Let's talk about Wii Fit... I am intrigued but they are pricey! Anybody uses it? Does it actually work or is it a waste of money? I want to tone up/loose weight before my August wedding and the gym is really not my thing. So, Wii Fit... yay or nay?

Re: Wii Fit advice

  • It's better than sitting on the couch.

It's a fun game, IMO, but that's it.

  • Wii Fit is fun - but not necessarily a tool to lose weight.  I love mine, and play it a lot, but I would never do it in place of good ol fashion exercise.  I do like the 30 day shred.  I know some people who have had success with that.
  • I really like it, but you have to be really dedicated to it to have it make a difference in your fitness level, I think.  I love the aerobic games, like hula hooping, boxing, and step.  The yoga is good for stretching and building strength, as are the strength exercises.  But I'm the kind of person who likes to be outside or at the gym because I don't feel like I push myself hard enough on Wii, so I use it more for a change of pace once in a while or just for fun with my boyfriend.

Do you already have the Wii game system />?  Then the Wii Fit with the balance board isn't that expensive, I don't think - maybe $80 at CostCo.

  • It's fun, and the BMI and weight tracker are fun, but for cardio? Meh. Useless. There's some good yoga and strength stuff though!

  • I have the Wii Fit Plus and I love it.  I don't use it as my main source of exercise though, more for a supplement to my gym routine.  I have a workout program for it called EA Active Personal Trainer which is pretty good.  Not a lot of emphasis on cardio though, more focused on muscle toning/strength training.  I also like that Wii Fit can track your progress, etc but I wonder sometimes how accurate the scale on it really is...

  • Ditto to 30 Day Shred....I tried it and it was awesome for being such a short workout. Combo of cardio and strength

  • We already have the console so it would only be the mat and game, but they are not that cheap! Hmm, I've heard the games are fun, but I'd like them to actually make a difference! I'm curious about the yoga, flykate. Is the yoga programme easy to use for a yoga-noob?

We had one and used it so infrequently that we sold it online in less than 5 months. Its just a game, it isnt in my opinion an alternative for working out, its just a videogame that you stand up and move around a bit to use. I highly doubt you really burn that many calories using it either.
  • I actually really like the Biggest Loser wii game for days where I can't make it out to the gym. It does challenge you, and you can choose your level of difficulty.
  • I love the yoga.  I've never been a big fan of yoga, but the Wii Fit has got me liking it.

The games are fun, but I wouldn't really use it as a tool to lose weight.  The hardest workout I've had on the game is the island biking.  If you do it long enough, you break a sweat and get your heart rate up.

I agree with everyone about the 30 day shred.
  • There was a news article about a fitness trainer testing one out and he actually said it does a really great job showing the proper form and center of balance. I have one and love it.
  • I use the Wii fit and have lost weight doing this and dieting.  However you have to be dedicated and use it for about a half hour prob 5 times a week.  My mom has also lost weight using it.  I don't like going to the gym so it is a good alternative.  The Wii active game is also a good workout. IMO

    What workouts do you do?
  • Navy- I usually do 3 reps of yoga (anyone) 4 reps of strength (anyone) then I do about 10-15 min of cardio 2-3 balance and I always do the advanced step.  I have only done the active a couple times because my mom has it and I just select random workout (but that really works you)  I have lost weight about 10-15 pounds and toned pretty nicely from it, so for me it works.

  • I'll admit, I haven't pulled it out lately, BUT...

I think if anything else it's a really great tool for keeping you accountable as long as you use it consistently. When I first used it I actually thought about snacking sometimes cause I didn't want to hear it be mean to me, lol! And, it keeps track of your weight, which is nice.

It's not good for cardio, but the strength and yoga stuff is pretty great. Plus, anything is better than just sitting on your butt.
  • I do about 35 minutes on mine every time I use it. I'll do the 10 minute free step on the fastest level as a warmup, then the island lap run (about 12 minutes I think?), then a 5 or 10 minute strength routine that I have the game put together for me randomly. I've definitely noticed a difference in my thighs and in my abs but it's not great for seriously building muscle (like how guys usually want to do).

If I'm feeling a bit lazy I work on my balance for awhile instead of doing strength. I have horrible balance due to a minor birth defect in my ankles and the balance games in Wii Fit Plus are the only things that have ever helped my balance and helped strengthen my ankles. Physical therapy didn't even help as much, imo.

  • When I first started working out I did a combo of 20 minutes Taebo and Wii Fit Plus. I think the plus is a lot better than the basic. I just did the runs over and over and over again. My usual routine was
    15 minute yoga warm up
    short run
    short cycle
    medium run
    medium cycle
    long run
    long cycle
play a few games, mostly boxing, kung fu, skateboarding,
then do 10 min strength and 15 minute yoga.

But...it takes me about 2 hours to burn the same calories as 30 minutes of tae bo or 30DS.

Now I just my fit plus for weight tracking or if I'm too sick to do other exercise.
  • I think it depends on how often you use it, what exercises you do, what other games you have, and how in shape you are in the first place. I have The Biggest Loser and it's definitely a workout. The other games are fun and like Brie said, it's better than sitting on the couch.
  • I liked Wii Fit, so when Wii Fit Plus came out, we got it.  I think that it's a good workout, but you must be consistent, and keep yourself accountable.  That's one of the hardest things for me.  When I started doing it though, I lost weight.  I started doing every exercise that was unlocked, and then as they unlocked themselves, I would do all of them.  You can create programs on Wii Fit Plus though, like weight gain, etc, and they tell you which 3 exercises to do.  I think that part is definitely worth it.  I pair it with cardio though that's done without the Wii.... when I feel like it.  I'm really not good with going to the gym and exercising, but the Wii is a good way to do it without thinking about it.
  • Thank you for all the advice! I think I may just get it after all and see how it goes, overall the feedback seems quite positive. I'm fairly slim, I just need to tone up a little and lose a couple of pounds, but since I'm not aiming for losing heaps of weight it might just work out. Cheers guys :)
