Memorial Day Weekend Wedding?!

I've just started planning my wedding and I really want an end of May wedding. However, in 2012 the last Saturday is the 26th, which is the weekend before Memorial Day which is the 28th.I know people like to do their own things to kick off summer over that weekend so Is is rude/selfish/inappropriate to have a wedding that day?

It can go one of two ways. Either people will enjoy spending their memorial day weekend at your wedding, or they will already have other plans for that weekend and RSVP no. I don't think it's rude or selfish or inappropriate to have your wedding that day, but some people might RSVP no because of other plans, so you need to be ready for that. It's as with any other holiday.

Are you inviting a lot of OOT people? They might actually appreciate the extra travel time.

You have to know your guests.  What do most of your friends/family do that weekend?  If people tend to have standing plans, it's a bad idea.  If they are usually sitting around the pool at home looking for something to do, it will work great.

We did ours the Saturday of Memorial weekend.  It worked great.  Our guests were mostly OOT, but driving distance.  The hotels were actually cheaper in the city, everyone drove down, and my parents hosted a family cookout the Sunday after.  Had we gone with Labor Day, when my family has standing plans for a giant cookout, it would have been a completely different story.

There's always a chance that someone will have plans on the weekend of your wedding.  In the end, you have to choose the date that works best for you the couple and your most immediate family like parents and siblings.  Just be sure to send out save the date cards around 9-12 months before the wedding since it's a holiday weekend, that way people will know in advance.  I don't think Memorial Day is like 4th of July or Christmas where people usually have standing plans.

We got married on Labor Day weekend and didn't really have any issue with that.  I've been to several other weddings on Labor Day weekends and I've never complained or thought bad of it.

There are a number of girls on the September 2011 board planning their weddings over Labor Day weekend. So far, no one appears to have had major issues, they just made sure to send out their Save-the-Dates early so that guests can be prepared.

id personally pick ther weekend before or the weekend after and avoid teh holiday weekend.

It's really up to you.  I've been to weddings on NYE, 4th of July, and I was invited to a Memorial Day weekend wedding (didn't go because it was a 10 hour drive).  I personally never have standing plans for holidays, but some people do.  As long as your immediate family and closest friends are ok with it, I say go for it.

You're not getting married until 2012. You have plenty of time to let your guests know in advance so that they don't make plans. Send your STDs a bit earlier.

We had our wedding on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, and it was awesome. We're pretty young and have many friends with demanding jobs that don't allow for time off, so our WP and friends appreciated having the extra time to travel and spend with us. We didn't have any declines based on standing Labor Day plans. Our Sunday wedding allowed us to get deep discounts with nearly all vendors, and we were able to have the bachelor(ette) parties, rehearsal dinner, and wedding all in a row so that OOT guests wouldn't need to travel multiple times.

However, our guests had a good 24 months' notice (booked our date early, long engagement, small guest list who knew by word of mouth what our date would be), and neither of our families have standing Labor Day weekend plans. If you don't give your guests much notice or have families with plans that weekend, I'd switch it.
