ideas for victorian + asian

so, here's a puzzle.  I would like to incorporate elements of victorian elegance, as well as elements of asian zen, into the look and feel of our ceremony and reception.  so far i'm considering paper lanterns, lotus candle holders, and a very lacy dress and shawl.  any ideas?

Re: ideas for victorian + asian

  • Not such a puzzle. During the Victorian era, there were a number of influences, including Asian, that they mixed into everything from clothing to home decor. Try to think of rich fabrics, like brocades and silks, and rich jewel colors touched here and there with gold. Also think of bamboo, cherry blossoms, fans, as more of the delicate aspects of Chinese and Japanese decor that was part of that influence. If you can find a floral tone-on-tone (think embroidery) silk dress with touches of lace for your gown, I think that would work very well. Remember that they liked richness and luxury in every aspect of their lives. I did a little research and found that a man named Arthur Liberty brought this style to the forefront during what was called the Aesthetics period around 1875. Have fun, and good luck! Kathleen
  • wow... thanks so much!
  • KathJack gave some good advice and suggestions. The decor in the Victorian era did have a lot of elements from the far and middle East. Kind of an ecclectic mix of imported items from Bombay and Hong Kong, which were once part of the British Empire. I could easily see having an afternoon "tea" like the Victorian ladies did, using chinese tea sets and trays. And touches like pagodas, wind chimes, and fans and tassles, ots of fans and tassles on everything.

you might be able to get some ideas from this website which has victorian and asian wedding themes featured on their website:http://deluxefavors.com/partythemes_asian0001.htmlhttp://deluxefavors.com/partythemes_victorian0001.htmlgood luck!
  • The term used for Victorian Chinese influenced art and items is "chinoiserie" There's a lot you can do with it. There were lots of inlaid woodwork with mother of pearl and coral in furniture, the china (as mentioned), room dividers in dark, dark wood with lattice work and don't forget the tea roses and black or oolong teas. Think of a traditional white wedding with red and gold chinoiserie elements to play up the asian influence. You could change into a red/gold cheongsam reception dress for example. Don't forget to check the new cultural & theme boards for more asian things you can incorporate.
