Kinda ER: Registry Completion, Sort of XP

So, I got my first "shower" gift today--a gift card to one of the stores I'm registered at.

I'm going to get the thank you card out right away, and I know normally, we say "thanks for the gift card! I'm going to use it to buy ____ for ____."

HOWEVER, I sort of want to wait until after the date, because of registry completion discounts. What should I say?

ALSO, SIDE NOTE: What IS Kohl's Completion Discount? Here is the link, but it's a little confusing.

Also, Target's? Macy's? Those are my other two. Just wondered if any of you guys used them and used the discounts successfully. Like. Do I have to wait until after the wedding?

Re: Kinda ER: Registry Completion, Sort of XP

  • Kohl's is 15%, Macy's is 10%, and I think Target's is 10% too (though I didn't research registering there so I could be wrong).

  • Thank you so much for the generous gift- I'm looking forward to using it to help us get started on married life!

[QUOTE]Hey Domino!  When I got gift cards at my shower, I wrote back and said <strong>"thank you for the gift card - this will be helpful when we finish buying items off our registry at (Kohl's) after the wedding</strong>." Or, if you registered at Macy's and your registry includes something like your toasting flutes or dessert serving set (something for the reception), you could say that you're looking forward to purchasing that (assuming it wasn't purchased at your shower). We were registered at Sur La Table, Target, and BB&B.  We've used the Target & BB&B registry completion discounts.  It's a one-time deal, so we gathered our gift cards and used them up in one visit to each store.  (btw, the BB&B near us had a bridal registry completion party last weekend where we got 20% off everything left on our registry and anything else in the store!!  I personally have LOVED the customer service from BB&B)

Thanks! This seems like the way to go.

I looked up the completion discounts, but Macy's was a little weird. I had to open a Macy's card for some reward bonus or something. The other two at least made a little sense to me. And I think they HAVE to happen after the wedding (like in a 90-day span), right? That seems to be what I get from the weirdly worded pages.
  • Yeah you get the discounts after the wedding.  Most send you a coupon or code or something to use.  The macy's rewards are that you get a gift card for 5% of what your guests spend on your registry.  You also get 10% back on what you spend with the macy's card.  Everybody gets the 10% off completion discount whether you have a macy's card or not.  The extra gift card at the end is only for macy's cardholders.

Ok, cool. So...in other words, when I opened a Macy's account today specifically for use for this stuff it wasn't for nothing, really, I'll get a little perk. So, it's like...icing on the cake.

[QUOTE]We didn't register with Macy's, so I'm not sure about how theirs worked.  But, yeah - we got coupons / vouchers from all 3 of our registries with a completion coupon code, whicih is only valid for 90 days after the wedding. <strong>TBH, they don't shut down your registry or prevent you from adding things to it once the event has passed</strong>.  There were a few things that I didn't think of from BB&B that I was able to get with the registry discount afterwards.

<div>Yep, and if your guests are anything like mine Macy's will be really popular and it adds up fast.  I called customer service the other day because I was just curious, and we have about $175 in rewards built up, largely from purchases I made (I bought xmas gifts, birthday gifts, BM gifts, etc. there) but also a lot of it is coming from gifts guests have been buying.</div><div>
</div><div>And it's true you can usually add things afterwards.  Depending on how many gift cards we end up with, we may add a couple of the more expensive china pieces that I felt awkward registering for to get the discount.</div>

  • I was too busy getting ready to move to remember to use my Target completion discount on time. I kicked myself.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

Macys I think you need to have a credit card with them to get the incentives. It was enticing what you get but a) we didn't register for enough there to qualify for anything and b) I have way too many credit cards. I def don't need to open another one.

I'm not sure but I don't think you need to wait til the wedding- call Macy's and ask. I think once the registry shows the gift has been bought you can get the free incentive gift.

  • I don't remember a Kohl's completion discount, but I think we got pretty much everything on that registry.

BUT, they also give you those 10% off coupons that your guests can use to get 10% off anything purchased off a registry and you can use that just as easily as they can.  We used that 10% plus a 15% off coupon that H got and gift cards to buy our Dyson before the wedding (after showers; boxed gifts aren't common in our circle for the wedding itself).  Strictly I don't think the lady was supposed to let us use both, but neither explicitly said it and she was being nice.
  • Oh pottery barn has also let me use the 10% completion discount a few times, even though I'm not married yet.  It could be because I always wait until it's the same older lady at the cash register... but others might have luck with that as well.

  • We also went to the BBB registry event.  We got a card load of stuff.  Between the discount and our gift cards, we paid a whole $29.  It was the best shopping I'd ever done.

They had cookies and water.  They had copies of our registry for us.  We got several things that weren't on the registry though.
