Jersey Shore-esque shows--will you watch "Massholes?"

I think it is kinda funny that they are casting for a show called "Massholes," which is basically the Jersey Shore but with Mass accents and Red Sox gear.

Do you watch these shows?  Are you offended by the stereotypes?

I have no interest in shows like this, and I am concerned about the people who actually do. What is wrong with their brain functions?
  • Oh my poor Aussie H...

I finally had him download some of the Jersey Shore so I could see what the hype was all about.  Poor guy was wondering who the writers for the drivel were and why they were still employed and I had to explain to him, that No, there were really people like that.

His idea of Americans was not improved much that day.

I really despise the whole idea of people becoming famous just because they're rich and are willing to let themselves be filmed 24/7.  I can't really say anything about "Jersey Shore" because I've never watched it.

That being said, I'm not from MA, but my FI is from upstate MA, from an Irish, blue-collar family, and lives and dies with the Sox, Patriots, and Celtics every year, and would be mortified about this show going on the air.  Especially if the people on it, like the Jersey kids, give MA a bad name.  But with a name like "Massholes", how can you expect it to be otherwise?

  • Oh most definitely. I am not offended in the least. I think people are smart enough to realize (like with the Jersey Shore) there are plenty of Massholes, and many of them do act as described in the article. Most people in Mass just make fun of them.

This paragraph made me die laughing."You'll pahty on the beaches of the Cape where Roast Beef Hoagies and cases of Narragansett Light are on every Celtics towel next to a bottle of baby oil and a can of hair spray! Are you down for one wicked cool summah, and be a part of the most wicked reality show evah!" It is funny because if they really wanted to make fun of a young adult summer on the cape they would bring up the abuse of Arbor Mist and over use of Lily Pulitzer/LaCoste/Woven belts with sea shells. They would talk about Jeeps not muscles cars and dirty white ball caps, not hair gel.

I kinda want Mike to try out for the "Prep from Wellesley" part since that is where he was raised. He likes to think he is so gangstahhh.

I guess Nebb should be concerned for me, I watched Jersey Shore if it happened to be on.  I think it's hilarious and sad at the same time, because I know people that could easily be on the show.  Watching it with FI is like sitting and making fun of those people together.

I would prefer that I had never met anyone like that and that the whole show was shocking to me, but unfortunately it's not.  So it's good for a laugh...until I get so disturbed that I have to stop watching.

Edit: I'm with M&M; most people that I knowfrom NJ aren't offended by the show, because they know it's making fun of a sub-group of people which DOES exist and which they themselves mock all the time.

Baystate, I bet Mike's family will be offended too for the same reasons. I mean, I don't blame people for getting offended, especially after the Jersey Shore debacle... but I bet it could be hilarious in some regards. Maybe because I grew up knowing too many massholes.
  • I know that I'm a transplant in Boston (only 3 years), but some of that sounds like it'd be Jersey Shore North.  Are there really people like that in Boston?  I mean a show about the driving would be hysterical and I love a good Bahstan accent, but do we have those muscley guys and hair spray girls?  Maybe I just don't work with them.  Or head down to Southie enough?

Oh, there are PLENTY of these folks.  Head over to Revere Beach, Rte 1, Quincy, etc. and see what I'm talking about.

Meghan is completely right--dirty white hat is really what should be on here, rather than hair gel!

I also thought Jersey Shore was hilarious--of course, in a "these people are sad and trashy" way.  Sort of why I enjoy Rock of Love :).

    Hee hee!  We don't really have this type in Brookline either <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-smile.gif" border="0" alt="Smile" title="Smile" />

My FI is from Boston (no accent - he's from an outlying area), so if we watch it (which we probably won't do, but we might catch an episode someday), we'll probably think it's kind of funny. He's not offended by that stuff. (It's true that everyone is obsessed with Boston sports. FI was wearing a Sox shirt one day and I said, "I didn't know you owned a Red Sox shirt," and he said, "What? Do you think I'm some sort of cretin? Of course I do!")

I once dated a guy from Southie, too, so maybe this will just bring back bad memories...

I've never watched Jersey Shore, though. The commercials kind of make me want to throw things.

  • My friends all live in Southie now... it is hilarious to go out to the local bars there and watch the difference beteen the locals and the "just out of college" invasion into the neighborhood. Not that one is better or something, but more just the complete difference in the two cultures that exist there side by side.
  • Penny, you live in Brookline? I would LOVE to live in Brookline. However, if we ever move to MA, FI wants to live in Salem. I'd love Concord, but we couldn't afford it.

Oh, and I DO adore Rock of Love.
